omega 3 and magnesium | ADHD Information

When do you give the omega 3 and magnesium? My son is 8, so I'm not sure how much to give. Do you space it between the medication? Do you give them at the same time? Also, the school is pretty much telling me I have no choice, he was pulled from class and evaluated by the school psychologist without them consulting me first and then a week later they sent a note home asking which I prefer (without giving me any other options) to move him into iep starting today or wait for a meeting. I checked the box-wait for a meeting. He has been in an after-school program called shine since last year. They help with one on one and they help them with their homework. He stays every day after school for 2 hours. I don't know if because of me putting him in this program they already have my permission to put him in a special class or what, so be careful on the steps you take to help your children. Thank you for your suggestions.

Aimie, I think that my son would be in  special education if he did not take medication.  I hate having to give my son the stimulant meds but so far this is the only t hing that has helped...I do also give the omega 3s and magnesium and I belive that the omega 3 does help with mood.

As far as the special ed goes they cannot do anything without a compete evaluation.   You cannot get an IEP unless you qualify.  I suggest you look at all of our options....in my opinion moving a child to a special class that has been in a regular class for a few years is inappropriate...the appropriate action would be to have assistance within the general ed class ...this is called incluseion and is the least restrictive environment....

Thanks again. My son was only diagnosed with adhd a few months ago, I'm not that up to date on medications and supplements concerning adhd. I'll try the supplements starting this weekend. My son was on Metadate cd for a few months and the doctor just switched him to concerta on Monday. The school sent a note home yesterday saying they want to put him in IEP(special class). I am disappointed in the school system for wanting to throw the children right into these classrooms without giving them a chance. I always considered my children "normal". My other son is going to be 14 and gets good grades without trying. The school complained last year that my 8 yr old was behind most of the other children but they passed him. I don't want to put my child in a "special class" because I want him to grow up "normal" and be with his friends but I also want the best for him. In this other class they will be able to work one on one with him. What do you think?Aimie, you might PM "lillian" or check out the School section of this board.  There are a ton of options with IEP's but I am not as familiar with that since we don't have a child in elementary school yet.  Lillian knows a lot about it though, so she could help!  check out the section of this board entitled "Alternative and Complimentary Meds" and look at the Omegas and Magnesium threads....Thanks for the info. I'm still not sure which to take when. I've been reading a book I purchased about adhd. Maybe there is something in there. One of these supplements is supposed to be taken closer to bed time-Not sure which one. Thank you for your help, it did clear up a few things.

Aimie,

We take both in the mornings -- our son has ADHD and the Magnesium, in particular is a calming agent.  He does, however, take an amino acid supplement in the evenings that contains a bit of magnesium as well (but not as much).  Omegas serve more as a mood stabilizer.

Someone posted a message about a week ago- I think it was titled "success story". She talked about omega 3 and magnesium. I purchased omega three and another supplement magnesium/calcium/zinc. Now I lost the instructions. One is supposed to be taken at night because it is supposed to calm the child down. My son is 8 and I'm unsure how much to give and which supplement to give when. Please help!
