Have any of you tried different medications with your kids and found one works better than the other? My son is 9 and has been taking adderall xr since he was 5. It works well for the hyperactive part of him but we have recently found from input from his teachers that he is still very unable to focus on the work given to him and his concentration level is not good.
Is there another medication that I should try? One that will also keep him calm as well. We tried straterra once and it didn't seem to do anything.
Any advice? Thanks
My son is almost nine. Been on meds since five. Have tried it all. Feel like his whole life has been a drug trial. Everyone reacts diff to meds. Addrall didn't even touch him. See? We get going on something good and then 6 months later have to up dose. Good luck!! It is so hard.
IMHO, all people, including kids, react differently to all meds. Find one different than adderall maybe.DTNPut97 wrote:

The effectiveness of the medication is all individual and a trial of meds is necessary until the right med and the right dose is found. You mention that your child has been on medication since age 5. Has the medication or dose ever been changed and what type of doctor is treating your son? The goal is maximum benefit, minimal side effects at the lowest dose possible. If your son's concentration level is not good then perhaps you should speak with his doctor about changing the medication or the dose. The purpose of the medication is not to keep him calm but rather allow him to focus instead of being highly distracted by everything around him. Children seem calmer on effective medication because they are not highly distracted by everything around them thus, not bouncing all over the place. After going through a trial of meds. if none of the medications are effectively managing the symptoms, I would reccomend getting a second opnion to confirm on deny a diagnosis of ADHD or perhaps there is something more going on.
