The teacher should hold whatever teaching certificate the state offers in that field. It's called different things in different states. Mine is "generic special education." Call your state education agency and ask what the certificate is called in your state. Lillian, with a "generic" special ed certification does this mean that you could teach in any on the exceptionalities? In both FL and VA people are trained categorically ( although they are getting away from this)...the course work was specific to LD, MR, EH ect.You need a teaching degree plus a major in special ed. Some schools hire teachers without it because often they're in desperate need for special ed teachers. If you have your degree, apply for the special ed and see what they say. You never know. They may just hire you anyhow. I worked with a teacher who majored in drama/music. She was hired to work in a segregated Autism program. She did well .. not as good as some but not too bad. She did her homework.does anyone know what kind of teaching credentials does a special education teacher need to have to teach learning dissabilities children. hope i asked that right?
The teacher should be certified in LD...however, in some areas it could be a certification in mild disabilities or varying exceptionalities.
