The Today Show on 9/18 | ADHD Information

Share

Below is the video clip. Once again, the goal is to promote a book. First he says "so called ADHD" and later on he says "kids who are asthmatic are at a higher risk for ADHD" Quite contradictory. Children with ADHD are usually average to above average intelligence so the problems are not of academic nature and while a healthy diet is good for everyone and can have substantial benefits, he knocks medication to give his theories merit and in doing so, that promotes book sales. Just another sales ploy

He is just trying to sell books....

I think he's going to get a lot of "HEAT" from that show! I think he just pissed off half the world.......There's no way to prevent ADHD, that was a stupid thing to say. ADHD is often inherited, how do you prevent that?

Did anyone else catch this morning's episode of "The Today Show"  They had some "expert" on how to make our children smater by kindergarten.  Well, he referred to ADHD as "so called" and also said it was preventable.

Maybe I'm being a bit touchy, but I was furious!  First for him to act like ADHD is something made up ... and then by more or less implying that my son could possibly have ADHD because of something that I did or didn't do.

Finally, what really  got to me was that ADHD was even mentioned in a segment on "making our childern smarter"  My son, as well as many other kids diagnosed with ADHD is as smart as a whip.  His ADHD has nothing to do with "how smart he is"

Thanks for letting me vent...

Are you serious???  I didn't see this.

I did not see the show. But I was wondering after reading ya'lls posts, you say ADHD kids are intelligent, I know that, and that they don't have academic problems......but they do don't they? Even though they are smart, they can not focus most of the time therefore their grades fall, right?

Oh ya!!!!!! I love when we go to a new doctor or a psych person and they get a history of my pregnancy and Eriks birth ie., were there complications during the delivery, did you take drugs etc.  They are always suprised to find out Erik is a twin and his twin brother has none of the problems Erik has the ADHD, ODD etc.

I guess I messed up Erik somehow and forgot to give Andrew (his twin) ADHD ooooppppppps

QUACK QUACK QUACK

Thanks for the link, Luvmykids2.

Oh, pleeeeeeeease!  "We know that ADHD is preventable."  What a quack!  I got news for the doc, I feed my son healthy food, like those mentioned, and give him supplements that contain the oils the doc mentioned, and my son STILL has ADHD!  Wow!  What do you know?      I'm the first person to promote supplements and diet in the overall treatment of ADHD, but I don't say diet and supplements prevent it!  And this guy is a neurologist!  Argh!  I feel sorry for all the parents who have taken their children to him.

More quackery indeed Lillian. I just fired off in an email to the "Today Show" Here is the email addy:

I posted the video clip near the beginning of this thread but I will post it again

With regard to learning, children with ADHD don't have a learning problem but rather a problem with learning due to a high level of distractability and lack of foucs. Thats the distinction. It's not that they don't understand or can't absorb the information presented but rather they miss much of it because they have a hard time filtering out distractions.

Luvmykids0238978.7321759259I was watching this when it aired.  It made me furious too!   I'm emailing NBC asap over this ridiculous segment!   Okiemom

Sometimes the kids just have a hard time socially, or controlling themselves or different behaviors people aren't used to.  The Kids are normally bright, but becuase they think outside of the box, teachers have A hard time directing them.  They often need to be taught differently.  Just Because some one has a speech problem and cannot perform in class the ways others do is not make a learning disability, if a kid needs glasses etc or braile, no one questions their intellegence.... But these are disabilities, not neccessarily learning disabilities, like ADHD....  know what I mean?

EXACTLY!!

The link goes to a Firefox download page and from there I can't get to the video.

My impression of his book:

Quack, quack, quack.

He had some good points. He gave some suggestions on how we can help a child with ADHD. Diet is a biggie and I always believed that; DHA was another that is important .. again, many of us have been giving this. I think with all the negativity this show brought out, we have to look at the positives .. the positives being that we parents are on the right track when it comes to helping our children with ADHD. Give yourselves a hand instead!

He did have some good suggestions for people who have ADHD or even for us to do for our kids. I think the quack has it in his head that since these things help control the severity of the symptoms in some people, they would prevent it if we all did it.

I have a great idea.

Lets go to all the hospitals and give a little goody bag full of cut outs of the alphabet and letters, plus jacks and balls to all the new moms. We can tell them that they have to stick their kid's hand in the bag and ask them to identify everything starting now and do it several times a day for 5 years. That way, they will have perfect, intelligent kids who don't have ADHD. We can contact all of them in about 8 to 10 years and find out if they all have perfect little A students who never wiggle in their seats.

That was very inexcusable of him. He had no business claiming ADHD is preventable when there is absolutely no evidence, no studies, nothing to prove that it is.

humm adhd preventable!!! yeah right  what a jerk for  saying that ..yes he wants to  just sell his  little  ole book to  people

because he has no brains!!

He was wrong about preventing ADD how do we know he's right about diet?

LD/ADHD ARE NOT ALWAYS TOGETHER ARE THEY? I JUST WISH FULL EVALUATIONS ARE NECESSARY SINCE ATTENTION PROBLEMS CAN OCCUR WITH MANY DISORDERS.  THIS WAY WE PARENTS HAVE THE WHOLE PICTURE OF OUR KIDS PROBLEMS SO WE CAN HELP THEM BETTER. EDUCATION SHOULD BE A MULTISENSORY ENVIRONMENT. BEST FOR THE KIDS/STAFF.

Well the comments he made about diet were ones based on the chemicals that has been added to our foods (and our environment). He talked about specifics like baby bottles and detergents. He had some good advice and I think if anything, we should look at the positive side of his message rather than take it personally. I agree, ADHD is not preventable but that was only one part of the entire show. I prefer to take the things that will either help me in the long run or what will validate what I'm doing as being correct. Ce la vie!

Too bad it's not a perfect world.  My favorite part of the segment was him saying people should use glass bottles instead of the plastic ones.  (glass was used all the time when I was a baby)  I could not imagine giving my ADHD son a glass bottle at 5 months old.  BAD IDEA.  lol  To each their own.[QUOTE=barb]

I think he was suggesting using the opaque coloured bottles oppose to the clear coloured bottles .. and if possible, glass. I also think he was referring using the glass bottles for infants (oppose to toddlers) which makes sense, being that the parents are the ones holding the bottles. LOL ogram. You didnt get that?
