Is this the right kind of testing?? | ADHD Information

Hi Guys!  I called the local Children's hospital and told them that I would like to have some testing done by a neuropsychologist after many recommendations from this board.  They finally called back and scheduled two appts. for my son.  The first is with a psychiatrist.  That appt. is this friday.  The appt. for testing is scheduled for Nov.7th.  I asked what type of testing it was and she named some of the tests (Wexler Intelligence, Woodcock Johnson, developmental motor and vision tests, reading comprehension, Connors performance, and behavior checklists).  I asked what type of Dr. is was and she just said "P.H.D."

Does this sound like the testing I should be having done on my son.  It is very expensive, 0/hr. and takes about 10 hrs. with review time.  My son will be there from 9:00-3:00.  My insurance pays for 60% but it still leaves us with paying for around 00 so I want to make sure this is what we should be doing. When it's done, what do they tell you?  I was thinking in my head that the testing would be more like where they put sensors on his head to find out how his brain is working.

I really am new to all this and a bit clueless.....Can anyone let me know if I'm barking up the right tree?

She didn't make it clear whether the dr you are seeing is a child psychiatrist or a neuropsychiatrist.

The tests are all standard so there is nothing wrong with them. I have no idea though what other tests should be given, if any.

I would ask the psych whether he is a neuropsych, and what he is looking for with the tests he is doing. Ask him anything you think may be pertinent.

There are no totally reliable physical tests to determine ADHD and some other disorders, so they have to be done this way. They are finding positive results with testing which indicates that in a few years they can do tests such as MRIs and brain scans to diagnose, but that is still in the future.

Hopefully someone who has been to a neuropsych can tell you whether that is all they do or the beginning tests or what to expect.

Good luck.
