I know that excessive talking is one of the symptoms of ADHD, but I am going to lose my mind soon!!!
My son is a constant talker.... We have tried the be quiet. His OT suggested that we tell him that our ears are tired and we can't listen any more. All that did was when he didn't want to listen he would tell me that HIS ear's are too tired to listen.
It seems that the talking in the car is the worse. We live about 20 minutes for the nearest city that has stores. So if we are traveling into town he will talk the entire ride in. He will ask questions that he expects answers to. And when he is not talking to me he is either making noises or talking to his imaginary friends.
Help I need a break!!!
Maybe his motor mouth is competing with the motor of the car? Give him a walkman CD with some music he'll like and see if that works. Also, explain to him about the safety of driving and how dangerous it is to disrupt the driver of the vehicle. Give him a pad and pen and have him write out the questions. At every red light, you will answer two questions. Tell him if it's not written, you will not answer the questions. .. i guess that'll depend how old he is and if he's capable of writing. LOL
Give him a game boy or leapster for the car...this might help with the excess chatter
PUT ON SOME MELLOW MUSIC ON IN THE CAR. TEACH DEEP BREATHING ALSO THEY ARE LEARNING RELAXATION. .Esmom38985.5050347222Dang!!!! We affectionately call our son JabberJaws! And yes, he is worse in the car!
We got Jeremy a Leapster L-Max for Christmas. It's been a great tool in more ways than one! He's actually learning while he's stimulating his brain and keeping quiet! He also has a CD player that he can take with him, but that doesn't work nearly as well.
Yes a game boy is a life saver in the car!The only time Will is quiet is when he's in the van.. He has a video player back there that we've always just used for trips.. Lately, he's been turning it on and watching it as soon as I pick him up from school or go on any errands. At first, I didn't like the idea but then I noticed how quiet it was!
I don't know why it works because he's not quiet like that just watching TV.. But I'm not complaing...

By the way, Will also talks in his sleep..
Again Thank you for all the support. It is just nice knowing that I am not the only one out there with these issues.
My son is only 5 so he can't write me questions. As for the red light thing. That would work once we get into a city. But we live out in the sticks so it takes 15 to 20 mintues of driving on the highway before we get to the city.
My son also talks in his sleep. I NEVER get a break!!! We have tried rewarding him that if he can be quiet all the way home he will get a reward, but that doesn't seem to help.
The volume is another thing. He has one setting and that is LOUD. With dh working third shift. He is sleeping during the day. I am constantly saying shhhh quieter please your dad is sleeping. I wish he came with a remote control that I could press the down volume and in my perfect world I would have a MUTE button for just 5 minutes of peace.
If he's not talking to me....he is talking to his imaginary friends.... there is just no silence in our house. Except the two hours that he sleeps at a time...ohhh yeah he talks then tooo
MOTOR MOUTH my son talks so much when not on meds and boy is he loud. Drives all of us crazy. Seems worse for us in the car also maybe there is a connection.
