Daytrana frustration | ADHD Information
Hi all,
I've been following all the threads on Daytrana and was hoping someone could give me some insight. We've been trying the patch on my 9 year old for over a month now. For the most part, it's working for her. (Still some rebound issues but they're getting better.) But the thing I'm concerned about is the welts it leaves. After taking off the patch, there is a red spot - which is fine. I know it's supposed to be there. There is some itching - still not a big issue. But for I noticed that a few hours after I take off the patch, the area is slightly swollen.
I have addressed this a couple of times with the pediatrician but since my daughter and one other child are the ONLY kids in the practice that are trying the patch, our pediatrician just doesn't know what to expect yet. (I find this very frustrating but it's the price we pay for being first.) The rep from Shire isn't much help. She just says the red spots should improve within 48 hours. Well, they do but they definitely don't go away. So what do we do? I can't seem to get a satisifactory answer from anyone.
We have tried every cream or lotion under the sun. It can't be good to keep putting patches on irriatated skin. (Though my daughter says it doesn't hurt.)
Any ideas, suggestions, insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
My experience is that the welts only got worse and never went away after
using any creams or medications. We used the patch for about 5 weeks.
The first 3 weeks or so were great. The red spots went away within 2-3
days just like Shire says. But, slowly but surely, they started to stay
longer and longer. We got to the point where we would have 3-4 spots/
welts on each hip, and no place else to put another patch. After going
over it with the pediatrician...and about 5 weeks after starting the patch,
we decided it just wasn't going to work. We just didn't have any where
else to put another patch. And, the spots would itch, and my son would
scratch them, which made them worse. They started to get little sores
and then they took even longer to heal.
Unfortunately, it just wasn't looking good and we had to stop. After we
stopped the patch, I could still see red patch spots 2-3 weeks later!
Hope it works out for you. I think Shire definately has a few bugs to work
out with this one!My son has had a similar experience as Chris Day. The first two weeks were okay and then red welts developed so that he had about three on each hip too. Mildly itchy and it seemed that Balmex helped the skin temporarily. He is back on Ritalin LA. I just haven't had the time to contact his doctor yet to get his take on it. I just remember him saying that if the skin turns red, to discontinue using the patch.
Haven't tried Daytrana yet as our insurance denied it. But, I am curious to know if the patch has latex in the adhesive. I don't know where to look for this. My children are all allergic to any type of latex as well as myself and this could be why the welts, rashes, etc., are occurring. Just not sure how to find out.
My two cents...Kathy
This all sounds so familiar. my daughter has been using the patch for approx 4 wks. she was also the 1st pt to use patch. since then, however, dr says another child in his practice has started using it. She has always only gotten the redness that has gone away within the 48 hrs. however, her patch on Thurs. was particularly hard to get off... never had been until then. She also said it was burning a lot that day. Anyway, when the patch was removed, part of the area underneath was almost purplish, like bleeding under the skin Called dr. and he said as long as it doesn't get larger & gets better within a day or two, put A&D on it & don't worry. Well, the 48 hrs is today, it definately has improved, but not gone away completely. Do the spots go away ? Does it just take longer for some kids?My 8yr old daughter is due to start the patch tomorrow 9/24, the doc told me to put the patch on her leg anywhere under the pantyline nowhere above. I am reading here that you put it on the hip.She also prescribed NUZon gel for if she itches or gets an irritated spot. I think I am the first in her medical office to agree to try the patch. She was on focalin and was not doing well. I hope it has sucess and works with out irritation....now I am going to go read up on where this thing is supposed to be placed before I start tomorrow.Lissysmama~ Our patch spots in the begining would go away, just like we
expected and learned they would. It wasn't until we were into our 4th
week
or so that the redness started lasting longer and longer.
Sweet N Silly26~ We also put the patch on the hip area, anywhere below
the
underwear elastic that was around the waist. It is my understanding that
the
patch should be someplace under the underwear area. But, if it's too high
on the hip, the elastic rubs it and makes it peel up. We put most of ours
towards the back...closer to the butt cheek! Rather than on the exact
side. You'll probably have to move it around from spot to spot because
you don't want to put it back on exactly where the other one was by the
time you get to the opposite hip again.
Hope that helps...Hi- My story is the same as ChrisDay's. We had to stop after 4 to 5 wks as well. We are now trying Adderall XR for the 1st time. I hope this works for us. I am still hoping that they will find a way to improve the patch. It had promise. Sorry I am not of any help.
