Yep! Read "The Out of Sync Child" I just picked it up from the library myself today a the recommendation of DD's Psychologist. I've always known DD had a few Sensory Issues, but I did not realize they could have a huge impact (Psychologists words) on many aspects of her life...Emotional, behavioral, learning, attentiveness, etc. She said the more I talk about her, the more she thinks it may be a bigger issue than we had ever considered. OT is suppose to work wonders for children with SID (SPD), so for us I know it is worth the evaluation at least!
Good Luck!
Sounds like he is overwhelmed for some reason. Perhaps he is sensitive to loud sounds? Does he have sensory integration issues? You can google Sensory Integration Dysfunction to get more info on that. Maybe you could observe a class and see for yourself what is happening in there. Then it may be obvious to you!Our son (who is 4) can also focus on a task but then get overstimulated in a circle environment -- especially if it involves music. Music in a group is very overwhelming for our son. We don't do meds but we do supplements (Omegas and Magnesium, etc.).... Your doc probably won't know much about them, but they have been very helpful for us! You can check out more info, if you are intersted, on the Alternative and Complimentary Meds section of this board. My son, 7, has always been scared of loud sounds. Even loud music and he always tells me to STOP when I sing....(can't blame him)....when everyone is laughing really loud, he gets really wound up and starts screaming. In music class he got a u in grade and conduct, her says circle time gets him all wound up and he can't settle back down. He can focus on things he is interested in at home and school, but its harder at school, he gets very distracted.
I have had him on suppliments for a long time, I recently put him on an herbal formula called Focus...it's working wonders for him!
Looks like I need to check out the Sensory Integration Dysfunction!
DillonsMom38981.6119791667Yep....... definately sounds sensory to me. I'd get him evaluated by a professional to rule out Sensory Integration Disorder. Get ahold of the book The Out of Sync Child to see if he may fit any of the criteria.

My son has Sensory Intergration Dysfunction and this sounds very much like what he has. He just told me the other day he doesn't like recess. I was thinking what kid doesn't like recess. Then he told me that it is too loud at recess time. We have the Out of Sync Child and the other book Activities to do with your out of sync child. A good OT helps tremendously with Sensory Issues. PM if you would like.
I checked out the SID, Dillon has some of the issues, not all, and most he had when he was younger, he seems to have grown out of alot of them.Or learned to cope rather. At the age of 4 my son was diagnosed with mild ADHD. Our psychologist recommended that we wait until the age of 6 before we try medication so we have be involved with behavioral therapy.
He is now 5 and I am confused with his behavior in kindergarten. The teacher says my son does a very good when he is working on projects at the table. He is focused and completes the task....there is not problem with learning.
The problem is at circle time. He does not want to be in the group and can't sit still in the group. He leaves the group and hides. When the group started to sing a song he was yelling stop it, stop! I have never seen him do this a home.
We have a appointment next week with the psychiatrist but I wanted to know if anyone has had a similar problem with their child.
I think it is strange that he can focus at the table but he can't handle the group work.
