ADHD Support and Chat

Hi. I am the mother of an 8 year old boy who has ADHD. Any one with a child with ADHD knows how difficult and stressful life can become on the parents, the child and siblings. For ages now I have been looking for some sort of a active chat for support where people can go after their children are in bed to unwind and just discuss how ADHD effects our lives. The only chats I have come across talk about everything BUT ADHD. Its rather disturbing. Teachers and people in the community who are not familar with ADHD have no clue on what we go through. Last year I about knocked my sons teacher out for the way she treated him. Teachers need to be more eduacated on the subject. Anyways, I am working on starting a chat room for support for parents/siblings/students with ADHD. I am no professional nor am I a doctor by all means. But i know enough about ADHD that if it helps one person I have accomplished what I am setting out to do. I do have many resouces I can direct people to if I don't know the answers. With the help of others in my position, I am sure we can become a succesful group who really need each other. STACIEhi every 1 im new i have a 7 yr old who was diganosed with A.D.H.D just over 2 yrs ago he was moved to a new school when he was finished p1 and is doing well in his work but at the minute he is having very bad violent episodes in school, he was changed to concerta but we found it wasnt doing him any good so was just given a bigger dose of ritlin. the other problem i have i have recently married and although his step father knows wot he has he still insists its onlt bad behaviour and not his A.D.H.D and it maddens me.

Joannetodd: In reference to the Step-father get a print out of the symptoms of ADHD and read it to him, that way he can learn more about it. Many people, for years, have accused the parents of ADHD children of not knowing how to put them "in place". It is very easy to say that when you don't have the problem. Ask him, if he has any logical suggestion that can make your son change? If he does, and it works... Congratulate him and pass it on to us. In reference to: he was moved to a new school, Is that a regular school or special school for his problem? The reason I ask you, I'm trying to get more opinions of parents with ADHD kids in special schools, to see if they are working for them.

I have read through a good bit of the forum messaages this morning related to sleep problems with ADHD kids. I am new to this site but not new to ADHD. My son is now 10 and was diagnosed as a 6-year old. We've gone from Adderall to Ritalin L.A. over the last few years and he currently takes 30 mg per day of the latter. His grades are A-B and the current dosage seems to maintain his behavior in school. I usually don't give it to him when he is not in school although I usually end up regretting my decision. Our "current" problem has been going on for about a year and that is the reason for my post today. He falls asleep almost as soon as his head hits the pillow but usually wakes up during the night and gets in bed with me. Sometimes he says its a bad dream but most often he says he hears things or thinks people are trying to get in the house. Sometimes he will go several days without waking up but these spurts are few and far between. I'm not really sure it's medication related because he is usually down from his meds by 5 p.m. His dad moved out last January due to our divorce but this was going on even before he left or my kids knew about our impending separation. We have a security system and I do not let him watch scary movies. He eats well most of the time. I'm at a loss. He is getting too old to sleep with me every night but I don't want him to be afraid. I'm not sure how much of this is manipulation or real. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks so much. Kristal in Pensacola, Florida

You might have to turn off your firewall, or set it to access the internet with the chat program. You might have to pick a very unique log in name, you dont need to put in a password. stacie613538271.65375

I cant get in at all - havent been able for a couple of days, I contacted Stacie and she said she is still working on it. I could get in b4 she changed it but others couldnt, now she has changed it I cant get in but others can. . Maybe it is cyber haunted.

Well I will keep trying Stacie, so dont give up and we wont.

ok.....some people are saying they enter a name and then go in as wrong password but they leave and try a diffrent user name so try using a diffrent user name and see if that works....rememeber you dont need a password.

Ok, I am no longer "wrong password" Thanks, Stacie, I LOVE the new room! Shadawbi38269.4801273148I don't know if you would conside this a special school or not, but my daughter, who is ADD, goes to a private christian school. She has since the year before kintergarden. They use the ABEKA sysem which is great!!!!!!!!!!!! Also the teacher and parent repore is great. But it takes both to make this happen. I feel she is challenged here and would not be in the public schools close to us.

OK....A COUPLE OF THINGS TO TRY. CAUSE IT'S WEIRD HOW SOME CAN GET IN AND SOME CAN'T. CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE "JAVA". ALSO WHAT BROWSER ARE YOU USING. INTERNET EXPLORER, NETSCAPE ETC. ALSO YOU DON'T HAVE TO ENTER A PASSWORD. IF YOUR USING DIAL UP MAYBE IT TAKES LONGER. DO YOU HAVE A POP UP BLOCKER? THEM ARE SOME THINGS TO CHECK INTO. ALSO IF YOU ARE BEHIND A FIREWALL. SO TRY THEM AND WE WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

I cannot get in. I register under my name, Dawn, but then it lists me as : wrong password & wont let me talk!! But I can see you guys talking. I was just there & saw "Skibber" saying I wasn't a real person! I am! Theres just NO enter button so I can add what I say to the chatroom! HELP!! WHAT DO I DO???

I have searched all over the net for a chatroom rather than a forum to get together with other parents of ADHD children and have found that its rather lacking,while the forums are great,they are not in real time the way a chatroom is.To this end I have created an IRC chatroom where you can join and talk to other parents and sufferers of ADHD,in fact all things ADHD.It is a brand new channel so I am hoping to get it out there and get it working.If you dont have an irc client (such as mirc) then you can use my java link,the address for the java link is http://sugar.irccentral.co.uk/chat and the address for those with an irc client is irc://irc.wondernet.nu/adhdchat

If you dont already have an irc client,you can get one by going to www.mirc.com it is free to download and very easy to use.To use the java link,click on the link and when you get a pop up,say yes ,choose a user name and come on in,its that simple. :)

I LOVE THIS IDEA, I WOULD LIKE TO TALK TO OTHER MOTHER & FATHERS ABOUT CHILDREN WITH ADHD. IT SEEMS LIKE NOBODY KNOWS WHAT YOUR GOING THROUGH. AND FOR THE STEPDAD MY NEW HUSBAND IS THE SAME WAY, HE THINKS THAT ALL 4 OF OUR CHILDREN NEED TO BE TREATED THE SAME WAY WHEN IT COMES TO DISLIPLINE AND I DO NOT AGREE. MY SON IS ALSO OCD WHICH REALY MAKES THINGS DIFFICULT IN MY HOUSE.
