Adderall XR | ADHD Information

Am looking for help for a friend. A friend of mine started her son on Adderal XR yesterday for the first time.  He took 10 mg of Adderal XR and after 30 minues, he was really dizzy and stayed that way most of the day.  He also spent most of his day crying.  His adhd is in the inattentive, be alone...he was put on meds to try and get him to be more social and of course to be able to stay focused, but yesterday he couldn't even leave his mom's side.  My son is also adhd and is on concerta, but I don't know much about adderall.  However, to me it seems it is not working well for my friends son.  Anyway have the same experience when first startiing adderall XR?

Any help for my friend is appreciated.  She is also going to call the dr. today.

Thanks.

When my daughter started taking Adderall XR, she was very subdued, and complained of a headache.  This lasted for a few days.  She also had some crying spells and moodiness, but this happened after she had been taking it for a couple of weeks.  This can be a side effect.  Your friend's son's reaction does seem pretty extreme.  I think that she is right to call the doctor!

A few thoughts come to mind. First is that I've not heard of ADD meds helping to make someone more social. That may be an unrealistic goal. Therapy might be a better approach for that.

Also, the dose might be too high or it might not be the right med. Adderall targets a different brain chemical than does Concerta and Ritalin and it may, or may not be what he needs.

And lastly, it is my personal opinion that children have more initial reactions like this due to the nature of what the meds do. Children are still developing physically and emotionally. There are still trying to figure out the world around them. On top of that, add a medicine that makes them more aware and focused and they become emotionally overloaded. Hopefully as they adjust these types of issues go away. But please note that this is a personal opinion.

This is the 2nd week of Adderall XR for our son.
He has not shown any side effects at all from taking it. We started it on a weekend so we could see his reaction to the medication. On Saturday morning we gave it to him just after breakfast and within in about a hour you could see where it had kicked in. He calmed down. His ADHD is inattentive/hyperactive. His focus on school work is difficult for him by distraction and also his motor inside was running at 110% plus all the time. He has changed completely and so far no side effects.

Many children react differently to these types of  medications. No matter the medication if a child is experiencing side effects that bother a parent they need to be seen again for a adjustment of some sort especially if the side effects really seem to be bothering the child or the parents are overly concerned...

Well, im having problems finding what dosage of adderal xr works best for me, but when it works,in my expirience, I am definatley more sociallable. As for the side effects, like Mystic Skyzz said, it's different for everyone, id talk to the doc bc if your have that severe of side effects, i dont think adderal is the right medication for your friends son.

Thanks everyone for your replies!  My friend's son is doing better today..not dizzy anymore and not crying all the time.  Still not as focused as she would like.  Dr. wants her to give it a few more days before making a decision.  I hope it works out for her...I know how frustrating it is.

Thanks again.
