chillibe,

You will find this site to be helpful. Sometimes people look but do not respond because they have nothing to offer at the moment. For instance, your question is about a 14yo and my girls are 10 and 11. The first part of our journey was evaluation. Pediatrician to rule out physical causes, educational psychologist to test for suspected learning disorders and finally a child psychiatrist who put it all together into a diagnosis and proposed treatment. Hopefully someone will answer soon about their experiences with kids in puberty.

Good luck on this journey.

Thanks for the replies, i can't change my dr''s now i have already changed them three times basically there are non in my area who are good. my son of 4 is under a paediatrician as he has mild autism i was thinking about writing him a letter and sending the checklist and the worries i have, wondering if he will say anything about seeing her,  i doubt it but i can only try.

First, you need to get rid of the docs you have and go to one you can work with.  Then get an evaluation, preferably from a neuro psychologist.  If your ds is struggling at school, then take her eval in and get accomodations for her such as extending test time, test alone in a separate setting etc.  The school will do the eval for free, but it will take them forever to do it.  If you possibly can, get a private one done.  Some insurance plans cover them.

I don't have a daughter, I have a 13yo son in 8th grade.  I know they're both different, but the stuff you do to get the ball rolling for an ADD/ADHD kid is pretty uniform.  If you can't talk to your docs, dump 'em!
Hi!  Welcome, I just wanted to re-iterate what vickie said -- sometimes your post will be viewed and no one will respond b/c they don't have anything helpful to add.  Keep posting though and I hope you find the answers you seek!

Hi, Chillibe, I am new here too. Happy to see you already got good commets!

Hi

Im new here, and would like some advice on ADHD/ADD.

My daughter has just turned 14 and over the last few years it has been really hard to get on with her. i could say it's hormonal, but she is late with puberty and this has been going on for years, im not looking for excuses for her behaviour either, but after talking to my friend with a son who has adhd, he was born the day after my daughter. he has been diagnosed with adhd and she seems to have a lot of his symptoms.

I have been trying to read about girls with adhd and found that 50% -75% of girls get missed with being diagnosed with this.

I have found a site that had a check list and asked my daughter to fill it in honestly and out of 35 questions she ticked 25.

she is also a tomboy, she plays  with boys rather than girls, she is very active and plays football and basketball, as it says in the site i put here that she no sooner comes in she is out again to another activity leaving her room a mess. i know some of these are symptoms of a messy teenager , but i still feel there is more to it than that, she has no patience, her friends call her 'hyper' she is difficulties with her school, she is easily distracted, there are lots of other things but i will be here all day. the thing is what can i also do about this, i can't go to my dr as they are rubbish and you can't tell them anything.

im just wondering if new comers are not welcomed here?  my post has been viewed 9 times but no one has said anything to me.Well, I think that your first step must be to have an evaluation done. Have her teachers ever contacted you about attention problems in school? That is where they usually manifest themselves first. Girls tend to have the ADD part without the H. Does she "space out"? Diagnosis is a tricky thing, as there are a whole host of other things that can mimic the symptoms of ADHD, not the least of which is typical, defiant adolescent behavior. We, here, try to be very supportive and certainly welcome you to this forum. It is impossible, though, and even unethical for any of us to try to diagnose a condition from a post on a message board.  We can certainly give advice about how to begin the process and relate our own experiences, though. There are several posters from the UK who might have specific suggestion for you.  I'll try to search them for you. Good luck.
