Is the play part of therapy with a purpose?
The psychologists our son sees is not a play one, most session start with just Nate in his office then my self or husband go in, we sit in and take notes on what he is talking to Nate about. He uses a coaching card system. Our son has always been very open with talking to Dr. we are lucky in this aspect. He has been a huge help sense school started, as we had bus problems. I agree it is costly and you want to see a benefit from it.Hi recee,
While my daughter was doing play therapy, the psychologist was also helping my husband and I with effective parenting strategies (parenting my ADHD child is nothing like what works for her older sister). She told us that until our daughter started to trust her and open up, we should not expect changes. My friend's daughter took about 4 months to finally talk to her psychologist about anything significant. The benefit we got was better ways as parents to deal with the rages, and behavior modification strategies (basically like ogram's marble system which we now use). When our relationship with our daughter improved and school ended for the summer, alot of the difficulties she was having started to improve. Our daughter no longer sees the psychologist, but the door is open if the anxiety and depression start up again.
Bring your issues up with the doctor. You should get an explanation on the expectaions for this therapy. My daughter's psychologist was open to these types of discussions with me.
