respidoral questions... | ADHD Information

My son, Geoff is on strattera and I don't believe that it helps much. I heard from a coworker who has a child with similar issues like my son that respidoral helps. I am not sure if I am spelling that right. My son's doctor suggested it as a last resort and he told me the side effects which made me scared as hell and blew me away so right away my answer was hell no. However, my coworker said she agonized over putting her son on this med and it helped him alot. It calmed him down, helping him make friends and be relaxed. I know every kid reacts differently to meds but I am looking to see if anyone else has had an experience (good or bad) with this medicine. Hi and welcome.  For a lot of folks, Strattera works for a while, then stops working.  We tried it for 6 months, then discontinued.  We then went on to Concerta, which was not a good fit for dd.  It made her angry and a loner.  Now she is on Ritalin LA and it works really great.  I have also read on these boards that Strattera can make a child more emotional and/or angry.  Perhaps you are seeing a side effect of Strattera.  I would agree that Risperdal would be for ASD or Bipolar.  It is an anti-psychotic.  Good luck, it's hard to find the right med sometimes.

I know that sometimes doctors use medications off label ...but I don't think I would use this medication to just treat ADHD...this medication is intended to treat bi-polar disorder.   Does your son do anything to indicate bi-polar? Has he ever been diagnosed with this?

I know we have a few posters here who have children who are bi-polar /ADHD, hopefully they will be able to answer your questions better

My son has ADHD and is and will continue taking medication for it. The reason why I asked about the resperdal is because of his social skills. He has difficulty making/keeping friends and little to none conflict resolution skills. He also gets mad very easily and does not express himself well when he is upset. He has made progress on this but he is still. One little thing can set him off to be mad the whole day. He is not like this all the time just sometimes looking at him wrong will make him cry. I do not think he is bi-polar and there is no predisposition of this in his dad or his biological mom's side. He did not have structure when he was little, little nurturing, then he went to his aunt where she was too strict and now we are trying to find and in between. newstepmom... first of all... WELCOME to the board... second if you are 100% sure you son is only ADHD then i wouldn't put him on risperdal..my son was given risperdal and while it did help him with the mood swings and it did calm him down it also caused him to gain weight, and drool ALOT.... i wish you luck....Sheri M.,

Thank you for your advise and welcome. Is there a particular ADHD medicine that you feel works better than others. I know all kids are different, react differently. My son is on strattera and he is still impulsive and lashes out violently every one in a great while at school in conflict situations so I feel maybe it is not as effective as it was before.

Someone in my family said Ritalin is scary in its side effects-do you have any expierence in that? i'm sorry i don't.... my daughter sarah is ADHD but all the medications seemed to work really good on her... dillon is bipolar and ADHD meds are a number 1 no no for bipolar children....    sorry....

Risperdal is not one of the typical medications used to treat ADHD...Have you used stimulant meds before  ( ritalin, adderall, concerta, focalin) to treat the ADHD? These are your more common drugs where as Rispedal is a mood stabalizer.  I do know that some of the posters here have used this med to help get some behaviors in check.

RISPERDAL® (risperidone) is a prescription medication that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of bipolar I disorder or to treat acute to manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. It is approved for use as therapy alone or in combination with drugs called mood stabilizers, such as lithium or valproate

My son tried adderall before but it supposedly did not help. However, his family situation was unstable then. I heard so many horrible things about Ritalin. This is our least expensive choice because it has a generic and we do not have insurance. Do you recommend trying one of these before the risperdal? My son is 7yrs. old and has severe bi-polar,adhd,ocd,odd,ld and some anxiety. He has tried numerous meds. He was taking strattera with risperdal but after about a year or so he started becoming more aggressive with the strattera. He is still taking the risperdal witch he has been on for about 4 yrs. he weighs 89lbs and is 49 1/4 inches tall. The weight gain is a struggle and he does drool sometimes. He also takes lamictal witch also helps with mood swings. He is still impulsive and he has a very hard time expressing himself.   This is such a hard battle finding the right med.  I know because my son's doc and I have been trying for afew months.  He is on concerta and we tried rispital with it...it worked wonders!!  I started to cry when he had a severe alergic reaction a week later.  FOr one week I had a "normal" household.  The fighting had decreased, he was more agreeable and was always smiling!!  To date we still have not found anything that worked as well.  Personally for agression and mood I found this drug to be wonderful!!Peachy,

I'm sorry that it only helped for a short period of time. Alot of my family members do no appreciate how much work it takes to keep an ADHD kid "good", so to speak. Other "normal" non ADHD kids have moments of inattentiveness and bad decisions so they do not understand the stress and extreme amount of patience it takes for a parent of ADHD kid. Is your son still on concerta? Did I understand that right that he had a rxn to the resp.? I hope you find something that helps soon. Keep up the hope.

Hi newstepmom,

Yes that is right after 1 week of happiness in our house he had amijor reaction to the risp.  We are on 27mg of concerta right now and on a very small dose of zyprexa, which does not seem to be doing to much.  We visit the doctor tommorow so if anyone has any further thoughts or suggestions please pass them my way.

Thanks

newstepmom,

Here are two charts of all the meds used in the treatment of ADHD

My son has been on Risperdal for many years.  It is an anti-psychotic medication.  It helps my son with his aggression and it encourages his appetite.  There can be side effects so you need to know what to watch for, but that's true of all medications.  My son takes Risperdal and Focalin for ADHD.  He's now also on a mood stabilizer, but he just started that med about a month ago.My 18 year old son has cyclothymic disorder (mild bipolar) and ODD.  He would become extremely angry, and at times violent over things that the rest of us would consider trivial.  His arguing would also become unbearable.  He was prescribed respirdal for this, and it did really help with the anger, and it also helped somewhat with the arguing.  He was much easier to be around while he was taking it.  Once, the doctor took him off it, and he assaulted one of his fellow baseball team members within a month.  We insisted that he be put back on it.  He had no side effects with it.  Since he turned 18, he has moved out on his own, and has stopped taking it.  We even offered to pay for it!   He says that he does not need it.  I only hope that with adulthood he has outgrown some of the problems from the teenage years!wow thumpergirl.... my son has been dx with just about the same thing your son has.. and dillon also started taking medication when he was 3 yrs old... at this time dillon is taking seroquel, depakote, and trileptal... we just started the trileptal again about a month ago... so i'm hoping it will start to help soon...   anyways  welcome to all the new member.. i'm hoping we will get a bipolar forum on this board soon.... i'm seeing more and more parents with bipolar children on here...
