Kids and toys | ADHD Information
Do your kids act and have acted as their toys do not exist or act as just dust collecters? Our son always has. my 2 younger kids got rid of their unfit toys as we call them cuz they wasnt being played with and they gave their unfit toys to kids that didnt have much toys. they have their favorites and thats it their content with what they have. now my oldest he thinks he needs to collect his toys because his uncle keeps telling him thats gonna be worth some money someday but he does keep his room clean.Toys were never a real interest with Daniel at all ever. He cares more about the outdoors.Indoors it's the game table, videogames,TV,computer games. Should I give the toys away since they are not being used? What I do for my son, (usually after xmas) is go thru my kids toys with my child. I make it fun because they discover toys that they forgot they had. I get rid of toys that are broken or not all pieces are there. If there are cars or something like that, I cut them dowm. I tell him he can have 20 but not 30 and let him pick which ones he wants and does not want. If it is a big deal toy for him and it is not a safety hazard(of course), I usually do no push it and let him keep it. Maybe you can see if the toys can be donated to like a church or something to where other kids will enjoy them so he feels good about getting rid of some of the toys. My son has never been into toys... he is drawn to them, but just picks
them up and puts them down and moves on. He never ever pretends. We
give toys "to the babies"; they go to Goodwill or St.Vincent DePauls. I can't
do it in front of him, but I can remove anything from his room (when he is
not there) and put it out of his sight and he will never mention it again, or
think about it apparently. I have tested this with favorite things and even
security objects, and he doesn't notice. He is just delighted when I "find"
them and hand them back. He doesn't ask for things in stores, but he will
admire them. I think that somehow he can't imagine the object being his-
does that make sense?
And wmtmann, my son is also into sticks. We go camping and if he finds
a branch and picks it up, he can't be separated from it. For hours and
hours. Then he will go into full meltdown when I refuse to let him bring it
in the tent at bedtime. I have learned to (carefully) let him burn it in the
campfire. Nate is into Star Wars, swords and sticks. Things like that.. We have 12 litesabers, and many kinds of swords.. which get taken away weekly when misused.. Also likes imaginex.. poeple with swords.. will play computer.. star wars legos.. we are working at board games.. younger brother likes games.. Nate also earns marbles for being a good game player...
