Meds/Impulsivity-Hyperactivity | ADHD Information

My dd just bounces around the house, chases her sister, is generally obnoxious, yelling and just being generally loud, unable to sit in her chair at the table, unable to answer questions, unable to mind, bad language.  After medication, much quieter but still has her spark, able to put 2 or 3 thoughts together, much nicer in general.  Not much appetite, though. Meds have made a world of difference for ds, almost 18.  From the first low dosage which allowed the wild eyed look to calm and focus to successes in many areas allowing him to realize his potential.

I can still see the difference...like today.  Since summer, if he forgot an afternoon dose of meds, it would not be a big deal.  He could still cope.  But forgotten meds plus stress is another story.   That situation will cause reactions that are more extreme... irritability, seemingly inconsiderate  and non-compliance.

So today he forgot pm meds, and after working (his choice) about three hours composing on the keyboard involving lots of repetition, the repetition was too much (he says).  I guess we need to discuss hyperfocusing and taking breaks again.  So afterwards he collapses on the floor taking the swivel office chair with him clutching it upside down to his tummy...refusing to let anyone use the chair.   brother storms out...I announce its time for going out dinner and head to the car.  good bye!   He was grumpy until, we stopped at a stream on the way home.  After a short walk on his own by the stream he said he felt much better.   Hey, I just remembered the beneficial effects of "green space and ADHD"    That might be a good incentive for a daily nature walk.

While much of this minor difficulty could've been related to just teenage, sibling and stress stuff (that's enough for anyone!) it still seems he can hold it together better on meds...it seems like his brain just isn't so overworked.

Sorry for rambling...

My ds was hyper active and very impulsive.  This is the boy who would repeatly forget and ride out into the street without looking.  (before meds)

Now he is the one reminding others to look(after meds!!!)

With the meds he just isn't as impulsive...The talking back has gotten better.  He whole demenor has changed.  I love my little boy again!!!

My daughter was practically failing last year and never played with anyone in her room but after meds she got so much better and made some friends too.My son started Adderall XR at four because of impulsive violent behavior.
He also couldn't/wouldn't communicate with people. ADHD medications
were the least scary of our options at that point, so I decided to give it a
try.
The first day that I got the right dose, it was like watching him grow up
about two years. He would stop and think before he did something. It
turns out that he knew all of the rules that I had been teaching, but he
acted too impulsively to access this information when he was stressed.

The first thing his teacher said to me was, "He's talking to the other kids!"
He had never even acknowledged them before. When I got there that
afternoon, both teachers were staring in amazement as he read a book to
a circle of kids... no one had ever believed me that he could read.

That night, we had a real conversation. Complete sentences, back and
forth. He expressed ideas. He asked me a question and waited for an
answer. I ran to the bathroom and burst into tears, I was so blown away
by this person I was meeting.

The other major change I noticed was that he was much much less
clumsy. His teacher said one day, "hey, his bruises are gone!" He always
had permanently black-and-blue shins. He no longer falls over for no
reason, or walks into trees, poles, and walls. Before meds he would
suddenly dart under my legs while we were walking. He had no concept of
danger and I could never ever let go of him.

I think that all of these changes were so dramatic because he was so far
behind... he is now on a high dose twice a day and has caught up socially.
He no longer hits me and can usually control himself when frustrated.
However, he isn't a "normal" kid and may never be. He reads at a fourth
grade level (he is five), but he gets distracted so easily that I have to sit
perfectly still while helping him with homework. There can be no
movement or sound, or he spaces out. The teacher must write out all
instructions for me; he cannot remember anything that she tells the class
regarding homework. He gets lots of facts mixed up.

Sorry I babbled a bit; I guess what I meant to say is that the medicine
hasn't solved all of the problems, but he couldn't have gotten this far
without it. I hadn't realized how many of his problems were caused by
impulsiveness. Controlling it changed everything for the better in our
case. But of course every kid is different. Hope this helps! My daughter has been on concerta for a few weeks (was on during part of the summer for trial as well). She is calmer at home and does not irritate her sister just "because it is fun". She had been shutting down at school and not participating much. She had become more interactive and has been more excited about school (good excited, not hyperactive excited). We are still optimizing meds so do not know the final outcome. Sleep was always harder for her and is actually a little better now.

Hi,

Ds been on Concerta for about three weeks.  Has not changed his personality, he is not a zombie and it didn't take away his spark.  Maybe even added a little more spark because he is happy. Doing fabulous in school.  However, he is still a little disorganized (we have to retrain him after many years of disorganization), has a little problem sleeping (stays up about 1 hour longer) and on occasion at night when meds stop working he is tempermental.  In a wierd sort of way, one minute losing it and the next calm and collected.  I need to talk to the Dr about this but she is on vacation.  Hope this helps. My son is on 36mg and is 9 years old.

My son has never been on medication so maybe I'm not the best person to reply to this post. However, everyone's experience is different. Some have had success with meds and some have had to go through years of trial and errors trying to find the right med that worked. There are always side effects in varying degrees.

My son was very impulsive, hyper and aggressive even at times. After adjusting his diet; included more fish and/or essential fats (omegas) into his diet .. that alone helped TREMENDOUSLY. He still has his moments but overall, he's a lot more calmer and in control of his behaviour than he was prior. He is in grade one.

How would you describe the changes in your childs manner and behavior
after taking medication for hyperactivity and impulsivity.
