Hi, after two long weeks on ritalin LA 20 mg, we are stopping it and starting strattera this weekend. Nate did well during the day on ritalin, but the night time rebound was horrible. Has anyone else gone from the stimulant meds to the non stimulant? If so did you see a rebound at night? Thanks
We had strattera added to our concerta for my son so that something was always in his system - you know that this is a build up medication and the child has to be slowly weened off of it, unlike ritalin that leaves the body quickly after the hours the person/child is able to metabilise it out. Stratterra and my son did NOT work out - my son became depressed and at the age of 8 started to say he wanted to kill himself!  We stopped strattera immediately and he never was like that again, read the side effects. It also doesn't help a hight %, usually it the inattentiave form of adhd, not the H'ers and impulsive ones.

We used Straterra for  a while with Metadate CD, I did not see any rebound.

Straterra, although not marketed as a stimulant, is a norephenephrine reuptake inhibitor, and CAN be stimulant effect.  It does seem to have better results with kids with ADD innattentive type, but my DD has ADHD ring of fire type, and we had good results.

My DD 9 used Straterra for 2 years, and we had great luck with it.Just make sure you start with the lowest dose( some dr's try to start with target dose) and ramp up slowly. be patient, because it takes 2-3 AFTER reaching the target dose to see results.

I found taking it at night lessened side effects, and taking with food helped tremendously also.

Straterra really has no *rebound*, at least none that I noticed.

My son is on strattera has been for over a year. It works good for a while. It needs to be taken with food. It never make my son's stomach upset. It did seem to calm him down but it took a little over a week to go thru his system. They say that it stays in their system if you forget to give him the meds for one day but I can tell the difference when he does not take it.

I have a question. How does Ritalin LA work?

We just started my son on Strattera yesterday.  We took him off Adderall because we suspected that it was giving him mood swings and some depression.  Since he's been off the Adderall we haven't seen any of those side effects.  As far as the Strattera is concerned though, it's day 2 and my son is out of sorts.  He got extremely tired on the first day and had to come home early from school.  He then slept all afternoon.  He has not stopped talking and making noises.  I did not give him his dosage this morning with hopes that I could change the time that I give it to him to the evenings.  I'm waiting to hear back from his Dr. right now.  I have a feeling it's going to be a long few weeks.

To Answer your question, I haven't seen a rebound effect in the evening.  What exactly do you consider "rebound"?  What do you see in your child?

If anyone else has something to offer on the effects of Strattera, I'd love to hear it.

My son hasn't  taken stimulants before but his started taking strattera as an only option since he has tic periods.  He was diagnosed about 3 1/2 months ago. For my son strattera seems to be working pretty well.  Since I started noticing effects I can give you different comments. Once strattera started working the effect (for my son) seems to last 24hrs.  So, at nights, he seems to be under control.  I can also tell you that in the first two weeks he seemed to have some difficulty falling asleep and the famous lack of appetite, but for now these things are improving.

I really suggest you to be EXTREMELY PATIENT with this medication. I got discouraged and anxious multiple times. I called the doctor many times and he kept telling me: "BE PATIENT!!!! DON'T STOP THE MEDICATION!!!!". In the box it says that you are supposed to wait about two or three weeks to see results. Well, it took me about 8 weeks to start noticing little changes in my son's behavior.  Now, everything really seems to be on the go and I am really proud of myself about the fact that I was very persistent with the medication.

I don't know if this med works for every body or not. I have read many negative posts regarding strattera results. I don't know if this is because people are not patient or because it really doesn't work for everybody.  For me it worked but I really was "VERY PATIENT"

I wish It works for your son and his night time improves. Don't get discouraged at first, give strattera time to work. Just as when you have a newborn baby; at first it is a lot of work because of the nightwaking, and then you are happy that you can sleep through the night.

Good Luck!!!

My son takes 20 mg every morning at seven o'clock. Initially when we started with the lowest dose the doctor told us to give it to him before bedtime just to see if he would tolerate it or would have stomach problems. As he didn't have any stomach problems he was adjusted to 20mg according to his weight and he takes it in the morning.  I usually give it along with a glass of pediasure ( he is not hungry in the morning) so I am sure that he has something nutritious before he goes to school. I have noticed that his appetite increases in the afternoons and is at its best for dinner time,  so I take advantage and give him his best foods at these times. His weight is not so bad, he is skinny but not really underweight.
Does taking the strattera lessen the effectiveness of it during the day-for example during school hours? wmtmann,

Strattera is dosed based on your childs weight. I know my 9 yr old weight 60 lbs and my doctor says that my son need to be 90 lbs to increase his dosage to 60 mg. He is currently taking 40mg. Just FYI, from my experience. We are starting him on the lowest dose, and then we will see about raising the dose. We always start meds on the weekends. I sent a letter to the school today informing then he is change meds. Rebound, is when the medicine is leaving their system. Or the half life that a drug has in a persons blood stream.

There are several versions of Ritalin, regular ritalin that last for about 4-6 hours, then slow release that slowly releases it in your blood stream, and long acting which last longer throughout the day.. we tried all three and had up the dose to 20mg. But, with each one when the meds where leaving his system he would fall apart, very agressive, physical out of control behaviors.
We have given all the meds several weeks or a month.. to be sure it didn't work.

We have read quite a bit on it and realize, it will be a few weeks or more. Which is fine.. We can deal with our son hyped up, and have warned the school...but, could not deal with the out of control emotional roller coaster ride we have been on after school. With the adderall and the 3 kinds of ritalin...

Taking Straterra at night really does not lessen the effects during the day since it is a 24 hour med.( once a day)

The  target dosing for Straterra is 1.2-1.8 mgs per kilo of body weight, for example someone who weighs 90 lbs target dose would be between 50 mgs and 70 mgs, with the 70 being the maximum.

The reason I took my DD off Straterra was because of the weight gain it caused her to have. She basically had uncontrollable appetite, and in an already chunky kid, that is NOT a good thing.

The appetite increase started roughly a week or two after reaching the target dose, and gradually increased.  After 2 years she had gained roughly 50 lbs.We stopped it because of this. My DD is starting Daytrana tomorrw, and I am hoping for an appetite decrease, she really needs it.

edbson:

I am curious to know if the uncontrollable appetite started since the beginning of starting the medication or after some time.  I heard a similar story of somebody related to a friend of mine but I don't know details.  This issue concerns me a little because my son has high cholesterol at his young age, not because he eats a lot of high cholesterol foods, but because his body produces it, this is an inherited factor. Since he started strattera he doesn't have a very good appetite, eventhough it seems to be getting better.
