SLD IS specific learning disablities fancy term for learning problems. Meds right now are okay for now i don't want him to zone
Hello i have a eight year boy who was told a 4 he was adhd. We have bounced from med to meds its all very upsetting. School tells me he has a learning disability called SLD ...I want him tested for dsylexis. he still isn't reading.. Its very hard having one child adhd and to other that aren't. If any one has any advice please send it....By the way we went with medidate cd 2 30mg in the morning...it last till about 4:00pm then down hill hard.... doctors say MORE MEDS....NO WAY I SAY
Welcome to the board! And what is SLD? As for the meds if you had problems check out our alternative board.oh okay, and now this post will be moved on top so others can see it.
My daughter has an IEP at school for her SLD (for her it is in written language, spelling and reading). Her written work is reduced and she works on handwritting separately. She is given her spelling tests in a small group and can get As and Bs in this setting; far better than the Fs she gets when tested with the class. We are just starting meds and she has become happier and more participatory in class. We are seeing little improvement with homework so may need to add a second dose for that. Her frustration level is better so far and there is no sign of the depression and anxiety that was so horrible last year (while we were going through evaluations and getting the IEP in place).
I know you do not want "more meds" but what about a low dose short acting form to help with the homework and ease the letdown period; or move to a different form and see if you can get a gentler easeing off of the med? Just some things to consider with your doctor.
I hear you... I have an eight year old daughter add with sld also. We discovered all of this about 6 months ago. About 3 months ago we opted for the meds and like you she was on metadate cd 10 mg. She seemed to be more attentive however this year with school ending at 3:00 the meds ore wearing off by 3:30 and homework was becoming a nightmare. We just switched to daytrana patch 10 mg and are ready to up it because she doesn't seem as attentive as she was on the metadate.
I also have an 11 year old daughter who is very bright. It is difficult for my eight year old because she knows that she is not like her older sister. Consequently, she does not want to accept help from us or her teachers she keeps saying "I know it I don't need the special teachers anymore" We just tell her that you are very smart you just need some help now to help you learn some important strategies that will help you to do even better!! I think that now that she is in 3rd grade she is more aware of herself and she is noticing that things are harder for her and does not want to admit it. Instead she trys to "cover up" and pretend that she knows the material. It is so hard and sad when I have to call her on it and she crys and says that she is stupid and asks why her sister and others are so smart.
All I keep doing is reminding her of how bright and special that she is and that if she continues to work hard eventually she won't need any special teachers..
Good luck with your son!
