Bad Ritalin REBOUND? | ADHD Information

I found that my youngest (who was 5 at when he started Ritalin) had that
kind of whiny come down for about the first 2 weeks. He wasn't totally
out of control, but he just would meltdown at the slightest thing.

After 2 weeks his body became better accustomed and he handled the
letdown much better. Now, he's 7 and doing just fine. We've had to go
from 5 mg 2x/day to 3x/day, but so far that's been ok. He's starting to
get to be problematic at school, so he may be ready to move to 10 mg in
the morning and 5 mg at lunch.

Of course he was all of about 40 lbs when he started Ritalin and we
noticed that his appetite was affected. This summer, because he's
inattentive, we simply didn't bother giving him Ritalin unless he needed to
focus. He gained almost 15 lbs! So he's now about 55 lbs (and 4'3").

One thing which helped was to, in the mornings, remind him of afternoon
activity plans. Then when he got home, re-iterate the plans so that he
KNOWS what is going to be going on. If plans had to change,
IMMEDIATELY tell him that plans have to change and why and talk him
through the different plans. That helped A LOT. He's a kid who doesn't
transition well (never has) so telling him things helped him prepare for
the transitions.I gave my 8 year old son his FIRST 5mg dose of Ritalin yesterday, he did fine
all day but as it wore off 5 hours later, he had an unbelievably horrible
rebound, like he was on speed: loud, annoying, heavy-duty whining, totally
wired. Then he became irritated, out of control angry, yelling at me "I hate
you, how could you do this to me" freaking out that his cousin was going
home (yes, we had company!!), trying to pull down his bunk beds, . I hated it
and felt horrible for him as I blamed myself. Dr said to not give him another
dose. We are figuring another treatment out. Anyone experience this?Thank you for your reply! I thought adderal would be a good solution. I will ask the Dr. if it is an option. I can't risk having my son act like that, especially at school! I'm sure you know what I mean!  The same thing happened to my 9 year when she was on the patch. We tried 10 mg and then 15 mg.  Those rebounds were horrilbe and depressing to watch. Something that helped was giving my daughter half a can of Mountain Dew. (I've heard others say this has helped them too. It's was just enough caffine/stimulation to ease things.) My daughter is now on Adderall XR (becuase of the rebound and some skin issues with the patch) and we've had no problems with rebound.
Yes, I do know what you mean! Our rebounds didn't come during school but they did come in the late afternoons - when we have Taekwondo or soccer practices, homework or dinner to fix. There was just no way to deal with them at that already crazy time of the day.

Good luck to you! I hope you find a medication that works.
Me too! Last year was a nightmare, he was having meltdowns in class, crying, hitting himself, flopping around, walking around the classroom, bluring out, getting overly frustrated but at the same time a very sweet, loving, smart funny guy.  confusing to all.  thanks for your suppport. how is she doing now? you say better?
Thanks for your response, I'll mention it to the Dr.
