First of all, your starting dosage is too HIGH, Strattera needs to be ramped slowly, from 10 mgs on, over the course of several days/weeks. it will take 4-6 at the target dose to see results. At 110 lbs his target dose would be about 60 mgs. Strattera is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor,Norepinephrine is thought to have important input into the central nervous system control of attention, concentration, cognition, mood, emotions, and blood pressure, and CAN have stimulating effects on some people, although not marketed as a stimulant. take a look at their website www.strattera.com there is alot of info there, and all the info about side effects etc.
Also, giving it at night when first starting lessens side effects in some individuals.
Hello, my son is 11, 110 lbs adhd/odd. His Dr. wants to get him off the Concerta, 56 mg and put him on Strattera, starting w/ 40 mg. I did read some posts about side effects, etc. I see sleepy as being a concern. I'm curious, can anyone explain how it works differently in the brain? He also takes Risperdal at night, 1-1/2 mg. I appreciate any info you could give me. I know there is alot posted, I just don't have alot of time to read them all. Thanks in advance!
I did the exact reversal. I was on Strattera and am now on Concerta. I am now 22 and was on Strattera about a year ago. for me it helped me focus and gave me a really open and "natural feel" (vs. the druggie kind of effect you get from stimulants) but I did have a lot of side effects from Strattera that I am glad to be away from. I had some sexual side effects along with very low urinating pressure, I had dry mouth most of the time, I lost 35 pounds in about 3 months but I did that on purpose...it took my hunger away which allowed me to eat healthier but once I met my target weight I held it with no problem. On major side effect I didn't like was I got incredibly tired in the evening. twice a week I would come straight from work and fall on my bed and not wake up until the next morning but that came about 4 months of already being on Strattera. but yeah my side effects are the same across the forum here so don't be surprised if you see these.when I started on Strattera It was a lot to bare with. I mean I could not do anything and felt horrible for the whole first week. and that was only 20mg and at the time I weighted 205 pounds! But the difference was that was my first ADD med that I had ever taken. So maybe your doctor things your son may have a higher tolerance or something since he has been on Concerta
hi there my son is on concerta xl 54mg aday, can i ask if any of the above have noticed nosie bleeds or weight gain while being on concerta?my son gets really bad noise bleeds, for no reason, they just start,Thank you all for your information. His Dr wants to get him off of Concerta because he has a tic with his lips, and he said the Concerta is probably contributing to that. Since he's probably entering puberty, he's changing emotionally as well. I'm guessing the Dr. think it's a better route for him. So, 40 mg is too high to start at? He told us to start at 40 mg the first two weeks, then up to 60 mg. Do you think I should be concerned about this dose? I'd better read some more...Thanks for telling me that it's a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. That's what I was looking for. Isn't Effexor the same type of drug, but as an anti-depresant? His first day, he seemed a bit hyper, but today he's less so.
