Hello,

I have a doctor appointement with my son tomorrow, h is taking Concerta since 1 year and it is not the miracle thing as I heard about it. He started with Ritalin at first but had terrible rebounds, so we switched from Ritalin to Concerta 1 year ago it seems to work pretty well at first,  but we have to increase dosage about a month later, ot seems to wokr well for about a month. He has many, many problems at school, now it's outburst everytime at school, I'm affraid the ask me to keep him at home, he is 6 years old, very bright but very stubborn too and extremely innatentive.

His doctor told us about Strattera, but I'm worried about it, what I read doesn't seems to work very well or having many side effects. I would like to hear about experiences with Strattera.

Thank you

Nath

Hi there,

My 10 year old son has just been prescribed Strattera after being on Dexedrine for about 4 years. The side of effects of the Dexedrine have been getting considerably worse, ie: terrible mood swings, irratibility, trouble sleeping/sleep walking, etc. We had him off his meds altogether over the summer and what a different child!! He actually had a great personality! He was bubbly, he got along well with his sister and both of us, and everyone more or less thought he was a changed child. He acted silly alot of the times, but he wasn't miserable. School started and we decided to try to keep him off the meds. Not even a week into the school year, his teacher complained that he was the "class clown", was acting silly and distracting the other students. The DILEMNA. Hubby and I decided to put him back on the Dexedrine. It has been a week and he is the miserable, moody boy that bullies his sister and doesn't get along with anyone. He is withdrawn and unhappy. Saw the pediatrician today and he suggested Strattera. Does anyone have experience with this drug? How does it compare to the stimulants? Any info would be great!!

Thank you,

We went to his pediatrist today and I have Straterra 10 mg, for 15daysm I have to give him his Concerta for a while, because Straterra doesn't work at first, it says it can took 1 to 4 weeks to work. DO you remeber how long it take for you?

You said the effect wore off, I'm affraid it can do that too, that is the problem we have with Concerta.

Strattera actually takes 4-6 weeks AFTER reaching the target dose to see results. The target dose would be 1.2-1.8 mgs per Kilo92.2lbs) of body weight. it will take a while to get to the target dose if it is ramped properly, usually 2 weeks or so. Lots of dr's rx stims with Strattera.I am surprised that nobody has replied to this. I was on Strattera for about 6 months with great results. it really helped me focus on what I was doing and also helped me get organized. I excelled at work as well as my many projects at home. Eventually the effects wore off and I had to get off of it. (but as of today I am back on it along with 36mg of Concerta.) But I did have some minor side effects from Strattera. I had a few sexual side effects and some problems urinating (as in low pressure.) I had some appetite suppression but I took advantage of it and got myself down to a healthy weight. once I hit my goal weight I was easily able to manage it. But I also had a major rebound effect in the evening and would sleep all day after work. Thats why many people take it twice a day. They say it is a non-stimulant but it can have some stimulating effects. You know when you don't have it but its not a horrible feeling like forgetting to take a stimulant. I would say it is worth a shot. If I had a child with the same problems I would start him/her on Strattera and go from there.
