Well yesterday went well. No side effects. WENT TO BED ON TIME!!!! My mother said she seemed a little calmer but by the time I got home you could tell it was wearing off fast. We'll see how school goes today. I read that it takes two weeks to really know the full effect.
I'll keep everyone posted.
My son has been on Metadate CD for about a month now. He just turned 8 and was diagnosed with mild to mod ADHD at the beginning of the summer. He has shown few side effects, we're just not sure if the 20 mg is enough yet. He did not show dramatic improvements at home, except he focuses longer on video games (not books so much). His new teacher did not know him last year so she doesn't have a point of comparison. She said that he shows some impulsivity at times, but is getting all of his work done (that is an improvement over last year). His handwriting is also a bit neater. We may go up to 30 mg next month after his check up to see how that goes, but our ped is pretty conservative. I am satisfied with Metadate CD so far, we just have to find out if he should be on 20 or 30 mg. My in laws are also very concerned about him being on meds, but since they haven't noticed significant side effects, they have backed off.
Becky started Metadate CD today. She is home from school today and my mother says she has not noticed and Becky has not complained of any side effects so far. She ate a few times, although it was less than usual. My mom said she also appears to be calmer although she is still her talkative self. Definately not having the reaction she had with the Adderall. Very sick (vomiting) and off the wall hyper with that one.
My mother is slowly coming around although she is still very nervous about meds. I think she needs to see good results and that will be encouraging to her. Atleast she has become more open to the idea than before. Basically I had to say this is my child and this is what we are doing and not let it be open for discussion or debate. Just walk away.
Keep your fingers crossed for me that I don't have a late nite (11pm with Adderall). Yikes!
Anyone who has experience with Metadate, I would love to hear from you.
Beckysmom38994.4942013889My 8 yr old son has been on Metadate 20 mg for 6 months -- capsule format as he cannot swallow pills. We open it and sprinkle on applesauce per his ped. Unfortunately he has side effects which include reduced appetite while it is in his system so he is really hungry into the evening and also hard for him to get to sleep. Not unusual for him to be up until 9:30 - 10 p.m. Yawning, but unable to go to sleep. We have seen fairly significant improvement in his school work and are torn. He also seems to have increased thought difficulties related to anxiety and getting stuck on negative worries...I worry that the Rx is aggravating this. We don't feel like there are many options for improving mental arousal, though, since he cannot swallow pills.
My son was diagnosed at 4 years old and we tried Adderall. It didn't work. too many side effects. We love the metadate cd. He's on the lowest dose since he was 5 and now he's 61/2. No bad side effects. I give him a real good breakfast in the morning before the med otherwise he says his stomach hurts. He is calm and himself but doesn't eat as much. After school around 3:30 he's very hungry and then he eats a snack and dinner/dessert. No problems sleeping. He goes to bed at 8pm and wakes up around 6:30am for school
Good luck with it. It works for us!!!
I'm an adult with ADHD, and I really noticed a great differnce with Metadate CD...I had to quit because of doctor visits and med prices...But I give the drug a thumbs up, for those with my hyperactive side of this ADHD.
lunanik,
I would suggest you get a child psychiatrist that is experienced with ADHD and med management. A psychologist cannot prescribe meds but can make recommendations for the pediatrician (you are still stuck with the pediatrician in that case). Good luck with this. It can be a tough journey.
I'm glad that it seems to be working for all you! Unfortunatly, it doesn't seem to be working for my 6 year old. She takes 10 mg every morning. The first few days it seemed to be working, she was calmer and no outbursts but now, it's like she isn't even on any meds. I don't know whether to keep her on or not...I know I should keep her on until we see the doctor again but I hate the idea of giving her medication when it's really not helping whatsoever.lunanik,
When do you see the doctor? You might give the doctor a call at tell him/her that it seems to not work anymore. If there are not any side effects, the doctor may give you verbal instructions to increase the dose prior to the next visit. My daughter's doctor always gives us instructions for such instances.
Vickie,
Thank you! We don't go back to the pediatrician until the 28th and we have only enough pills to last, one per day. When we saw the ped., she spefically said that she wouldn't discuss meds over the phone, that we'd have to make an appoitment to see her and discuss it. I am trying to get her an appoitment with the psychologist, hopefully before the pediatrician, and then go from there.
