Concerta is a long acting methylphenidate. It does sound like rebound from the short acting methylphenidate that your son is using as a booster when the concerta wears off. You might talk to the doctor about a second dose of concerta, maybe a lower dose for the second concerta. This would be a problem if he has problems sleeping while on meds. Meds in the system at bedtime actually help some sleep.
My doctor is talking about a second dose of concerta in the afternoon for my daughter because it wears off before homework. My daughter also has no rebound problem with the concerta.
Has anyone had their child on Methylphenidate? My 9 year old son is using it before he goes to football practice for his behavior. By the time practice starts at 5:00pm, his concerta has worn off. However, he is acting horrible starting around 8:00-8:30 pm - he is sulking, mad, not wanting to eat, yelling at his father, as if he is having rebound. The dosage he is taking is very low, I believe it is 5mg. tables so he is taking 1 1/2 tablets, sometimes 2 depending on if he has a party after practice on Friday night. Does anyone else have any experience with this med. who would share. Does it sound like rebound to you guys? My son has no rebound when the concerta leaves his body, very smooth and he takes 72mgs and weighs almost 90lbs and is very tall, not heavy at all.
Thank you in advance for all responses!

Yes it does sound like rebound to me...can you try football without any additional meds? Is he able to function? Afterschool activities are also an issue with us. I have been using magnesium in our afterschool evening activities and it seems to be helping ( my son takes a stimulant Adderall during the day). Magnesium is supposed to be a natural calmer and I read that many children with ADHD are deficient in this. So far we have been able to make it through ice skating lessons and Scouts without any additional stimulants ( we just started this a few weeks ago so hopefully it will last). There is a long magnesium thread in the alternative section along with a description of an easy test to determine if you child is deficient in magnesium....Anyway just an idea...the drug you mentioned is the generic for ritalin and my son also had rebound when he took it.
