Homework

I never seem to be able to bring myself to do homework. I have a long day of school and soccer practice so afterwards I'm too tired and only want to sleep. I am the worst procrastinator that I know! Any suggestions?

Well, it sounds like you've put in a long day before you even have to start homework!  I can understand not feeling like it.  Unfortunately, not doing it can cause some pretty big problems, as I'm sure you know.  I tend to procrastinate myself, especially on things I don't really want to do.  Here are some things that helped me and may help you:

1) I don't know how old you are, but if you're feeling to old to have your parents set up a reward system for you you can reward yourself.  :-)  Get yourself a little treat (mine was a can of Coke and some wheat thins, or sometimes M&M's).  Only have this treat when you do homework.  Stopping periodically for a quick sip or drink seems to curb the urge to stop or do something MORE distracting, then I can get back to work.

2) Does soft music distract you?  Find a good study spot and put on your favorite music.  That's like a reward too - something to make you feel happier when you're doing something you don't like.

3) Promise yourself a reward AFTER you finish your homework.  Maybe a parent or friend would help support you by agreeing to do something fun with you after a certain number of days that you get your homework done.

4) Start with the easiest stuff first.  It may be easier to get started knowing you're doing the easy things first.  Once you're into it, the rest may not seem so bad.

5) If #4 doesn't work, start with the hardest thing first.  Once it's over, the rest is easy in comparison.

6) If you're really tired, and don't want to do any homework, set a timer, and just promise yourself you'll work for 20 minutes, 45 minutes or an hour, whatever seems like enough to get a little done.   Tell yourself to just work really hard for that time and then you can go to bed.  You may not feel like stopping as much once you've worked for a while, but if you do, at least you've gotten more done than if you ignored it.

7) Ask teachers or parents to help you break down bigger tasks, like big reports or projects, into smaller tasks.  They can set deadlines that you have to check in with them and have part of it done.  It will feel a lot better than saving it until the last minute.  If they know you really want to do well, most will be willing to help you.

8) Make lists.  It feels good to cross things off when they're done.  (just don't spend your whole homework time making a list of what to do.  I've done that!)

Good luck.  You sound like someone who will go far - you're involved in a sport so it sounds like you have the ability to stick to things - you are aware procrastination is a problem, but you're motivated to figure out how to fix it.  Congratulate yourself, then pick one or two of these, or any suggestions someone else has, to get started.  Today.  (hee hee - just kidding about the today part)

When you get home, Try to chill for a few minutes (5-10 works best). Then buckle down to your homework. Go in to a quiet, none distracting place. I dance 12 hours a week, so i have to buckle down to my homework i have know time for the computer or the free time. Take my adive. Give it a try and see how it works and let me know on how it is doing

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!!

Usually I work on homework all day between (and often during) classes and lunch and sometimes even before and after school while I'm waiting for club meetings, sports, ect. Sometimes I can't focus enough to do that though...but it's an idea. But I follow a pattern something like this every day...more or less:

1) Prioritize - List the most important homework first. If you have a paper due tommrow, start it...but only do half. Also, do morning classes homework first, you can work on the homework for the last class of the day during lunch.

2) Don't fool yourself by thinking you can sit down and do it all at once - I struggle with this sometimes. I like to sit down and do everything in one sitting, but that is nearly impossible for someone with anything more than mild ADD. Answer half the questions and go get a drink. Complete some math problems, eat dinner. Read for class, go clean up a corner of your bedroom. It takes much longer to do it this way, but often that is about the only way I can finish homework.

3) Find someway to plan your workload - I manage four AP level classes, several clubs, gym trips, and housechores. The only way I can do this is to make good notes of EVERYTHING and write them down. Every now and then gather everything up and sort and organize it. Then space everything out in accordance with your scedule. Yes, it takes a long time to do it, but it's better than failing classes and wasting even more time.

4) Study Skills Classes - If you can get a free period or study all in the middle of the day, go for it. Sometimes schools offer classes where you can learn to study, but those typically don't work for students with ADD. The best thing is time to sit and chill, zone out, work on homework, plan, pick boogers...whatever.

5) Scedule some time off for yourself. You need and deserve it.

I am by no means a guru of time management, but that is a general list of stuff that works for me. (I also realize that's a lot to read.) Hopefully you can find something that works for you in there. I struggle with it every day and I fail a lot, but you can't get discouraged. I did so often and to such a degree it contributed to the onset of my depression.

Take care of yourself

Well done for bein able to manage 4 AP classes I was really shocked. I was gonna take AP econ or AP bio but m econ teacher said m math skills were to low and my chem teacher basically said (in a nice way) i suck at chem and i'l need it for bio. Nowi regret it..Especially economics.

I know how you're feeling, nightowl.  I get home after several AP classes and then Youth in Government or another ECA, and I can NOT stand the idea of doing my homework (though my medicine helps tremendously).  Here's what I do:

Give myself 20 minutes to relax or read (use a timer, or you won't stop).  Start with an assignment you understand, you won't get discouraged, and hopefully you'll get hyperfocused.  If when you finish one assignment, you're REALLY tired out, take another 20 minutes (of course this is if you have the time) then get your work done.  If you have to work 20 minutes, take a 10 minute break, and so on, after that; go for it if you have the option.  Here's other helpful things I've found:

1. Make lists.  I do it everyday, where I write down my assignments, what my homework assignments (and other things to do) are, and I try to schedule what time each will take.  I also number each thing according to priority.  That's tricky though, you have to make sure you DO accomplish what you need to, not just keep putting things off because you can.

2. Get into a place where you can concentrate.  I need silence (unless my meds wear off, then I'm bouncing around and I do a 5 minute work, 5 minute play thing until I fall asleep or forget to go back to the work).  Sit at a desk where you won't be disturbed (as in, not a kitchen table or something, in privacy) and have things you need (stapler, paper, pens, protractors or calculators for math, etc) nearby-PUT THEM BACK WHEN YOU'RE DONE!!!  I know, I know.  Meh.

3. Rely on your lists to schedule things (that means STICK to it ) and use your time wisely.

4. If you get worn out, TAKE the break.  You won't be able to concentrate anyway once you get like that.
