DELIVERY QUESTION

My  pregnancy was difficult, bedrest for preterm labor and meds. DD's delivery was uneventful, healthy screaming 8 lbs after 4 hours of labor. Born on the due date so not early or late,my oldest who has absolutely no issues whatsoever had a very very difficult pregnancy, very difficult labor, was 8 lbs 3 oz, and was 3 3/4 weeks LATE. So you never know... ADHD is hereditary.

Hi,

My story. NO problems in pregnancy, except for severe morning sickness (a common problem in my family).  Full term delivery, easy delivery, and ADHD child.  Probably some of the best medical care in the USA, (husband Medical School Professor)  and still my child has ADHD.  Please remember how genetics plays a role in ADHD. I am sure other issues also, but nothing strange in my pregnancy.  Hard to figure it all out but we all have wonderful children who will give us grey hair.  It is not an easy road but no one said it would be.

Just my story.

We had pre-term labor, meds to stop it, preterm birth four weeks early.  There is some suggestion that the meds they give to stop preterm labor are related to adhd, especially when prescribed off-label. If this is true, I wish someone would just come out and say it. I certainly wouldn't sue anyone, because the alternative to the meds was to have my son at 24 weeks, which would have been far more detrimental, probably fatal, than adhd.

somewhat... they wouldn't let dad or me hold dillon for 2 hours...

funny you asked about this... i just ordered the records for labor and delivery... i requested them about 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything...  i;ll have to call tomorrow about it.. yes our kids problems could be due to brain damage..

SHERI: COULD OUR KIDS ISSUES BE TO THE LACK OF OXYAGEN THEY HAD? OUCH!!!  Forceps?  I am soooooo glad i had a c!!!!!!SHERI OUR BOYS DELIVARIES WERE THE SAME. WHAT'S WAS  THE DELIVERY LIKE WITH THIS KID?iN OUR CASE BLUE WITH CORD AROUND NECK AND NOT BREATHING AND ONCE WAS QUIT BREATHING ALL AT BIRTH.  he started to come at 7 months after a head on car wreck, gave me meds to prevent premature birth.  then didn't come til he was 2 weeks past due.  Then emergency c-section after 24 hours of hard labor.  Hated being pregnant!  Love being a mommy.dillon was premature... 4 weeks.. but he tried to come at 7 months.. i was on total bedrest until 8 months... cord was wrapped around dillons neck twice i think... i know once for sure... he was blue as blue could be... i remember saying "OH MY GOD HE'S BLUE GET HIM OFF ME".. they had laid him on me but his color scared the holy heck out of me... oh yea he was also a forcep baby... his heart rate kept dropping for they had to use forceps.... hurt like hell....No pregnancy problems - my son went into ICU for a day for rapid breathing but okay other than that.  i had a planned caesarian with jude,no stress,no problem.normal pregnancy on his side.premie by 6 weeks, no amniotic fluid, breech, c-section..in the NICU for about 7 weeks afterwards. Are we looking for similarities?  Anyways I am a diabetic and they took my girl 3 weeks early due to my diabetes and due to the way I am built they took her by planned C-section.I had a great pregancy and no complications at birth.  I truely believe it is genetic and environmental. Had a semi-emergency c-sectionat 39.5 weeks.  Baby stopped moving.  They did a biophysical profile, and she scored a 1 of a possible 7 .  Almost all amniotic fluid was gone.  When she was born, her Apgar score was 9 out of 10, so everything looked very good.  She was the easiest baby.  All milestones except speech were met on schedule.  Almost as soon as she started walking, the trouble started.[QUOTE=cameronsmummy]
Well my waters broke at 8 am on a saturday morning went to the hospital and was told that if he hadnt been born within 18 hours they would induce me because of risk of infection. They didnt induce me until the weds morning at 9 am! When he arrived 14 hours after that ( was induced on a drip) he was rushed to special care where he spent 8 days there due to an infection off my waters!I was handled terribly and i think thats part of my sons problems!

Wow, cameronsmummy!  I had thought that my daughter's delivery taking 40 hours was excessive!  I'll bet that you were exhausted!

I HAD NO PROBLEMS, SHE WAS A HEALTHY CHILD, NO PROBLEMS AT BIRTH, I THINK GENETICS ARE TO BLAME AS WELL. I AM ADD ALSO. BUT I HAVE LEARNED OVER THE YEARS HOW TO ALTER MY LIFE TO MAKE EVERYDAY LIVING EASIER. I'M TRYING TO PASS THAT ONE TO MINE BUT SHE MAY NEED TO DEVELOP DIFFERENT WAYS, WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT

My Boys were born at 30 weeks gestation.  Went into preterm at 28 weeks , they gave the stuff to stop labor and to develop lungs.  when they were born had regular premie issues, slight jaundice, oxygen etc. 5 weeks in NICU- One has ADHD and the other doesn't (as far as I know)  (possible Learning prob)

My daughter was late and aspirated  was on oxygen, 5 days in NICU but no ADHD

I had few problems during my pregnancy with my daughter, except for heartburn, and she also moved constantly.  I began having pains a week past my due date.  This was at about 9:30 on a Sunday evening.  I went to the hospital, and this continued through late Tuesday afternoon.  These were hard contractions, but I failed to dialate.  Every OB/Gyn from my doctor's practice had rotated through, with the exception of my regular doctor.  One had even tried to send me home earlier that afternoon (I refused).  When my regular doctor came on duty (I think I started yelling at him), he broke my water.  This was not effective, so he gave me a medication to speed up the labor process.  Finally, he discovered that her head was slightly tilted, and she was unable to pass through the birth canal.  She had failed to engage.  He gave me the option of trying forceps, but he added that he thought that she might be up too high.  I elected at that point to have a C-Section, which occured within the hour.  The whole process had taken about 41 hours.  My daughter was considered normal and healthy, but had a black eye, and her nose was slightly pushed in at the beginning from her being her being stuck.

I don't really feel as if the birth process contributed to the ADHD, however.  I have it myself, and I think that my mother has always had it also.  There are a couple of people on my husband's side of the family who have it but are still undiagnosed.  I feel that in most cases, there is a strong genetic connection.

I was on time, but that's because they checked me in and induced labor.  I was very big (went from 126 to 172) and the doc said most of it was fluid.  Was in labor for 18 hours, fully dilated but he wouldn't come out so they did a c-section.  Ds swallowed mecunium right before delivery and was in nicu for 7 days.  They would have kept us longer, we had really good insurance.  Ds was 9.5 lbs at birth.

After ds was diagnosed, I asked the doc (npsych) where it came from.  He said the muconium caused a lack of oxygen and that could have caused the ADD.
i had toxemia, my 2 girls were born natural childbirth, they both had the umbilical cords around their necks & my 2nd had jaundice & a heart murmur......full term both----7lbs 11 1/2oz & 9lbs 11lbs......I was riddled with UTI's during my 2nd pregnancy. I was overweight to start with, since I'd never lost any of the pregnancy weight from my 1st child. I could not ward off the UTI's and was put on a prophylactic dose of antibiotics for the entire pregnancy, from about 16 weeks on.

Delivery was complicated, she didn't handle the stress of the contractions well. I was induced, but a few hours into it they had to remove the pitocin and let me go on my own. Hour after hour, they would come to check on me, and say... "We're going to decide on a c section in the near future."

I  managed to delivery her without the C section, but it was very difficult. Once she was out, she was healthy as a horse. But she was colicky, never slept as an infant, and in fact, she never started sleeping through the night until around June of this year.... after a tonsillectomy. She was just days away from her 5th birthday.

Now she sleeps like a log, and I'm seriously afraid the medication is going to cause sleep problems.

How fun.......................I am an OB/GYN nurse and use to work Labor and Delivery.   My twin pregnancy was a little rough.  I had high blood pressure and some preterm contractions.  Was on medication to reduce the contraction (terbutaline)

I was induced at 37 1/2 weeks (considered term for twins)  Hard long labor, dialted, pushed a couple times then had a C/Section due to my blood pressure.  Babies were 6#13oz and 5#10oz and had apgars of 9 and 9 (which is great) they went to term nursery but I went into heart failure and went to the ICU.

The boys were never oxygen deprived or under stress during labor (just me).  Erik has severe ADHD combined type and ODD.  Andrew is basically your model child, aims to please, doesn't argue too much and gets good grade.

I have to go with genetics too

Ds started talking at 6mos and hasn't shut up since.  He started walking at about 20 mos, but the docs said that was because he was soooo big, that his legs couldn't support his weight. erik spoke early and clearly (he is a twin) and he walked at 9 monthsmy son doesn't have a diagnosis yet, but he does have speech delays, inattention and some hyperactivity at 1 year. He wasn't breathing at birth and was in the nicu for 10 days. Also had seizures.

Oxygen deprivation at birth causes ADHD. Even kids who don't go on to have major issues do have ADHD and learning disabilities at school age. It's a proven link. Oxygen deprivation is probably just one cause of many, though.
Just a quick poll. Of the posters in this topic, how many have seen speech delays or physical issues like not crawling or delayed milestones in their kids?
