upto 48% ADHD kids have a speech delay | ADHD Information
fair enough! The point I'm making is that not all kids with a significant speech delay have more than ADHD.
Hey devonboo and 4myson. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Hope both your kids are doing very well.
My adhd son didn't have problems with speech when we talk about pronunciation of words. Actually he was one of the kids who had best pronunciation of words when he was in day care. The only thing that is troubling him these days is on the way he should be explaining things. He has time organization issues, it is difficult for him to talk about yesterday, tomorrow, or this morning, it can be said that he has difficulty telling when things happened or will happen. He therapist is working this matter with him. Telling a story with multiple events is also tough for him, he usually doesn't know where to start; he needs to be given clues so he can develop his speech in a logical way. He is working all these aspects with therapies and I am hoping that he improves fast because he is 6yrs old; next year entering primary level in school, that is first grade in my country, and he will have to give frequent speeches.Kids can be diagnosed as autistic and add.
ADHD is one of those things that seem to happen for several different reasons and is of several different kinds. I'm guessing ADHD kids have speech delays for various reasons as well. Some due to inattention, some due to brain injury to specific areas, some due to oromotor issues. I'm guessing that if there is a delay in the really primitive stuff like the babbling it must be a more significant delay than if the child is late to make sentences.
This is a good article for people wondering what the early symptoms of ADHD are. it also, I think, confirms that speech delay is not an autism specific issue. There were fine co-ordination issues and developmental delays in 63% of the ADHD kids.

I AM JUST BACK FROM THE SPEECH THERAPIST WITH MY SON.
SHE SAYS HIS PROBLEM IS NOT A CONVENTIONAL SPEECH DELAY BUT BECAUSE OF HIS LACK OF ATTENTION AND LACK OF CONCENTRATION
Makes lot of sense. My adhd son had a significant speech delay. He didn't say his first word until he was 3. He recieved services through the state, for his speech. The therapist did mention, of course just casually, adhd to me. She told me it was way to early to diagnose, but it might be considered later on when he was older. He had no other problems at all, just his speech, and of course, he could never sit for more than a minute.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. Donna
I'm working on getting speech for my son as he was diagnosed by a therapist as having some articulation issues and a tongue thrust. He sucks his thumb and thus possible reason for tongue thrust. His is not too severe but I don't want it to be ,later on for him. I believe in being pro-active. I've always wondered if speech and ad/hd have some connections. He wasn't too far behind in starting to speak but it did come a little later than some of his friends in daycare. I just associated this to his being an only child.
Thanks for sharing this article. I always love reading things to keep on top of things.
