My son is also on ritalin and has to take a noon dose at school. The pharmacy gave us some tips but he still can't (more like won't) swallow a pill. The doctor and the pharmacy both said that taking it with food is perfectly ok.
For school I brought a jar of applesauce that the secretary keeps in the fridge. They take 1 spoonful of applesauce and put the pill in with the applesauce and he takes it no problem.
At home I try to vary things a bit some days I use yogurt, other days I use pudding or applesauce, anything that they like works!
Good luck
Mom2Irishtwins, Taking the pill with pudding or oatmeal is just fine but I suggest that you practice taking pills or this pudding/oatmeal thing will get old....when my son was 5 we practiced with tiny candy sprinkles of various sizes ( the type that you put on cakes) this seemed to help.
If you google teaching pill swallowing you will fine lots of different guides that can help.
I had the same problem with my son, it will get better you just need to find what will work for him. I take my vitamin at the same time with him in the morning and that seems to make him feel better. Also, try something other than water -- my son likes to take it with OJ! In the beginning he was chewing the pill a little and the Dr. told me not to let him do that.
We are now going to have a different struggle as I would like to have him on the longer acting med, which is a bigger pill!!! We tried the Daytrana Patch, but found it too difficult to peel, took too long to kick in, and doesn't stay on!!
Good Luck!!
My son started medication for the 1st time yesterday and has never
Mariaven39005.1543634259We practiced with Tic Tac's. My son thought this was great! It was candy and it didn't scare him at all. Now he's a pro! Good Luck. When my son Cameron first started taking his meds I would put the pill on his tongue and he would take a drink of milk using a straw. The medication slipped right down with such ease. Good luck!
