tenex | ADHD Information
My 5 year old daughter was just put on tenex. .5mg two times a
day. I have concerns about giving it to her because of it being a
blood pressure medication. Does anyone have a child this young on
this medication and what are the effects good and bad. It is her
first day and she seems lethargic with her second dose. It did
help her behaviors. Should i be concerned? Advice/ comments
please!!
It can make them sleepy until they get used to it. It is sometimes used to help with sleep issues. My daugheter is on 1mg guanfacine (the generic of tenex) 2x a day to agument her concerta. My daughter is only 58lbs and started to lose weight on the concerta, so guanfacine was added rather than increasing her concerta any more. Guanfacine helps with calming, hyperactivity, sleep issues, defiance and weight issues but not attention. Shire just submitted data to the FDA for a long acting form to get approval for ADHD and there are several studies supporting the use of guanfacine for some of the ADHD symptoms. The doctor is prescribing it "off label", which they can do with any drug. The big concern at hither doses is stopping suddently; because it is a blood pressure med, a sudden stop can cause a sudden spike in blood pressure. My daughter's doctor said to raise or lower it by increments of 1/2mg (each time a day) and that we could go up to 2mg 3x a day if needed. Please discuss any concerns with your childs doctor. HTHMy 6 year old daughter is also on this. We give her 1mg just before her focalin wears off at 3 in the afternoons. For the first couple weeks it made her sleepy and she was going to bed quite early. This effect eventually wore off. We have now noticed several months later that its effectiveness in calming her in the evenings has also worn off. We will probably have to up the dose. I wouldnt worry too much about the blood pressure part. Children tend not to be very affected by the hypotensive effects.thanks for the responses, I am very anal about things and tend to worry
a lot more than I sould...just needed some reassurance that this is the
right thing to do. We are on day number two and I have a new
child!!! We went out to eat and it was pleasant and we went to a
volleyball game together. Allie and I actually enjoyed a day
together istead of me chasing her around making sure she wasn't going
to hurt herself. Allie is a very energetic 5 year old who has
adhd and as you know with that very poor impulse control. That is
the factor her doc and myself are so concerned about. She has
made statments of jumping in front of the train, mind you we only live
across the hiway from the train, she has jumped out windows, opened the
car door when I'm driving down the road ( I now switched to a two door
so this don't happen) she beats the daylights our of her sister
no matter how hard I try i can't be with her every second and she takes
full advantage of that. I am really hoping the affects of this
medication stay positive and we have many more days like today!!
I am glad you are seeing good results. You might look at Ogram's marble thread. It is at the top of the parents forum (it is a sticky). It is a positive reinforcment behavior modification plan that works for many.
