Straterra Help | ADHD Information

My 8 yr. old son has been on Straterra for 12 days now.  The first 7 days he took 18 mg. and then bumped up to 25 mg.  Here is my problem....my son seems to have a harder time focusing since he has been on the Straterra.  Doing his homework today was a nightmare.  He was so unfocused.  He has been forgetting things from school again.  I am ready to take him off the Straterra but I have heard that you need to give it at least a month.

He has tried Concerta and Adderall with little to no improvement in his attention and focus.  He was off the stims for 2 weeks before switching to Straterra and actually did pretty well.

Do I need to continue the Straterra???  Is it normal for him to be worse on it for awhile??

Thanks for your insight!!

did you ask about Foculin?  My son is on it and it has no nasty side effects like the older generation of meds.

My son just started on Strattera about  4 weeks ago, after failing with Adderall and Concerta.  When I had him in to the doctors he said it does take time for the medication to work properly, and since I took him off of it for a few days 2 weeks ago he said it is like starting over. My son hates taking anything, so we gave him a chance without but just couldn't do the school work, now that he is back, he actually got a "great" day letter from his teacher, and got all his spelling words right (And you could actually read what he wrote).. So I'm going to keep trying this for at least the next 4 or so weeks and then see what happens. Before with meds, they would work for a spell then things would change..

But my son is on a stronger dose. He is 8 years old, and he was started on 25 mg, and bumped to 40mg after 7 days. But I'm questioning the dose right now after reading some of the messages about Strattera.

well, i am totally against strattera.  but the body has to build up for it.  and that takes up to a month in some people.  and watch your child closely, the effects can wear off over time.As I said we started on 10, and are up to 18 and have samples for 25, if needed, Nate is 7 and weighs 50lbs, I know it is dosed by weight as well. I to read the links to the other page and found them helpful.

This is why strattera is the kind of med that you better start during a vacation period. It takes time to kick in. For my son it took about 8 weeks and I still see that in the afternoons it  tends to wear off. He can't take another med because he has tics so this is why I am still hanging there.  I found a lot of information on strattera in this site: www.millermom.proboards107.com: I suggest you to take a look. You can pm me also if you wish for any question.

Good luck!!!!

We are on our third week on Strattera, we started on 10 and are now up to 18. We have scene a big improvement in his angery etc. But, we had huge issues with the stimulants. We went from one to the other over a weekend. His attention is a bit off, but that should improve over time.. He still has issues when he first gets off the bus, that is more of a transition from school to home.. when he needs to blow off some steam from school or the bus ride home... I would wait, it does take time for it to work... What does the school say? DS, is doing good, the teacher just has to redirect him a bit more right now.. but, nothing she can't handle..
