Update - I heard back from the doctor, she feels that some of the behaviors could be an indication that the dose is to high, and she wants us to try taking him back to 2.5 mg and see how he does with that.
ogram - thanks for the suggestions on nighttime routines!! I guess that we have created our own problem in allowing them to have some tv time right before bed. Usually only a half hour or so, but if I try to change the routine and stop the tv time, then he sees it as a punishment. Will have to do some work to get this moved around!!
yes it does get better. you might want to start a night time routine that is very calming. like turning the lights down all over the house. turning off the tvs and putting on some soft soothing music. take the bath about 30 to 45 minutes before bed and do a bed time story in a soft voice. And, ask the doc if there is some thing else they can suggest for sleep. when my ds was small we would give him a cup of fennel tea and it would help him fall asleep.Hi everyone, we are very early into our first try with meds (started 5mg of Focalin XR on Saturday) the dr. said that if the 5mg is not enough to move to 7.5 mg after one week.
I am seeing in his notes home from school and daycare that he is exhibiting a lot of loud/yelling behaviors. Yelling at school friends, loud during circle time. My first reaction was that this probably meant that the dosage was not high enough, but the daycare teacher said that yesterday he was able to sit all the way through circle time, which seems to indicate that it is helping with his attention. I am waiting for a response from his 4K teacher.
My other concern is nighttime - he is having a hard time falling asleep, when I get home he is pretty hyper stimulated, he is seeming to kind of hyper focus on things - last night it was a comic book that had gotten wrinkled in his bed - he was so intent on straightening it out that he would not stop. Seemed like he couldn't stop - that then he got so angry and upset and cried and it just seemed like he couldn't control that either-he would look off into space and wail and rock. I held him until he finally settled down and we worked out a plan to press the comic overnight...then he very sweetly said "thanks mom for helping me. I love you mom". I am hoping that most of this is just his little body getting used to the meds - but could it be that the meds are not right for him?
This is so HARD. I have a call into the dr. to get her opinions, but I thought some of you might have experiences to relate!!
Please tell me it will get better!
