Rebound question | ADHD Information

Could rebound from a medicine happen only in the first couple of weeks and then disapear?

We increased from 20mgs to 30mgs of Metadate Cd once in the morning and for a period of about 2 weeks he was going crazy in the last hour of school. Bouncing off the walls.  After that then I started giving him another 10mgs at lunch time then the rebound disapeared.  Now.....sometimes during the weekend I only give him 30mgs. once a day and I really do not see the rebound.  Could this be right?

Maybe I can try to stay with only once a day and not have any problems during the school day.     I am trying to stay away from having to get medicine at school.

Any thoughts??

thanks

I think that once their body adjusts to the meds that the rebound can lessen.

I don't have personal experience because we are just starting meds and are having quite the rebound!!

From what I understand, it's possible for the side affects like rebound to dissipate after a while. That's why they say not to give up on a med after just a few days.  I'm glad it's better for you.  I know that when we take the weekend off, we don't see any rebound-type behavior until the second day.

Sjbmom,

I wish my child did not need the meds and did not have these difficulties. When we stopped concerta for a month during the summer, we went back to the lowest dose and increased after a couple days to the effective dose. I was concerned starting up on the higher dose after a break. I had cleared this with the doctor. He said this is one of the many reasons to save the old meds.

we had a really wierd experience today- my son is on 30mg metadate cd- we increased from 20 mg. about 1 month ago-- he had last week off so i didn't give any meds, than once school started today he took his 30 mg.  the nursed called about 11:00, he was sweaty, clammy, having trouble catching his breath, and feeling wierd.. i took him straight to the pediatrician, and she said he was having an anxiety attack and hyperventilating......i am so afraid to give him the meds tomorrow..called the pyschiatrist, she is away on a conference..i am so tired of these side effects, i feel like not giving meds at all. does anyone else feel that way??

I would give the world to be able to get off my meds. I have been on mine for about 15 years, and i am onnly 21! But i have tried to get off my meds, and many times I actually feel sick, similar to SJbmom. I remember one day I didnt take my meds when I went to class, and I felt so weird adn sick to my stomach. As far as your son goes SJB, how long has he been on these types of meds? Also, what activities was he doing when this happened? I had a really bad attack in high school just like your son, they wanted to send me to the hospital. What happened was I was in gym class running the mile, and when I am on my meds I push myself  really hard. My breathing couldnt keep up with my heart rate, and my heart rate couldnt keep up with my mind. Ok well here is some GOOD news. Your son's body probably just isnt used to the 30mg yet. For the first few months, while the body is getting used to the higher doasge, try to have him not do as many "heart accelerating" activities. It may sound bad, but the body needs to get used to this drug, it is an upper and will have weird effects at first. Just be patient. Good luck
