helping my daughter succeed in school | ADHD Information

Hi,

Thank you both for repling.  First I would like to say THANKS SOO MUCH FOR YOU SUPPORT.  and I mean it from the bottom of my heart.  I have be going through this alone for so long that I really feel that my world is crumbling.  But thanks to you respond, I know that I'm not alone and that's great.  Secondly, I chose to keep my daughter back in pre-k and now her teachers are telling me that she may not pass into the 5th grade and want me to consider putting into a special ed class, which is not an option for her, because she is much too inteligent and smart for that ,yes I must admit that she may need one-on-one attention, but to lable a child special ed would in my opinion do more harm than good. It's not that my daughter can't do her class work and pass the stated exams, it 's just keeping her focus take alot more of their time than they have. And I also understand that their are more students in the class other thand my daughter, but I willing to do my part, why is it that they will not help me help them do theirs.  I'm really not familiar about IEP, could you help me understand it and how could I get infomation about this.

Again Thanks for Responding and I really do apprieciate it.  P.S. Could I put you on my buddy list.

Dear terried, I have been in my same situtation since my dd was in 2nd grade now she is on 6th grade and is still de same, I get a call like everyu other every from any of her teachers, I really don't know what to do, I has never gone to the psiquiatrist but finally I decided to take her this coming 25 of october, I know that she needs meds. It is really hard, I love my dd so much that I feek so guilty that she is going thru all this situation, but I don't have control of it.

I hope dr. helps me because I don't know what  else to do????????

Hi, Terrie.  Can I ask, what kind of interventions or modifications do you have in place for your daughter?  If she has a medical diagnosis and is struggling in school, she should be eligible for an IEP, which should make her road much easier.  Assuming that you have had her tested, what kind of treatment are you using? Perhaps it's time to try something new.  Let me tell you that you are definately not alone in this.  School problems haunt adhd children and break their parent's hearts. Your best course is to get school modifications for her, and support for yourself.  CHADD has many local groups (check it out on the net) or check with your school district if there is an adhd parent support group in your area.  That face to face interaction is priceless.  Good luck.

Hi, my name is Terrie and I have a 10 year old daughter who is really struggling with school and state exams.  I stay in constant contact with her teachers on a weekly basis and the respond is the same.  "She is having a hard time keeping up with her peers and has to be put in another class to complete her classwork".  I'm feeling like I'm failing as a parent, not knowing what to do to help her succeed. If there is anyone who has or is going through the some thing, please communicate with me to let me know that I'm not going through this alone and there is support out there for both me and my child.

Hi Terrie,

No, you're definitely not alone, that's for sure. I have a 10-year-old son going through the same thing. Except I try to avoid the teacher like the plague! I know he's going to tell me some more bad news! They wanted to put him back in 3rd grade, but that's not the answer. He's already a year behind because I didn't put him in Kindergarten at 5, I waited a year. So  he would be 2 years behind, and I think that will cause more problems than it would solve. And yet he's failing pretty badly, though he does have his good days and his bad days.

The teacher just looks at me as though I should just fix the problem, but it 's not that easy. I'm trying various things and some are helpful and some aren't, but it takes time. What helps one ADHDer may or may not help another. I'm just under time constraint because I told the teacher to just give me until the end of the marking period to figure something out, and that day is fast approaching.

You're not failing as a parent! This is tough to deal with and we're all doing the best we can.

Thanks soo much for the information, I will speak with her teacher first thing tomorrow morning. You guys are the best, I feel like I just met new friends.

Again Thanks Alot

terried,

Go to Wrightslaw.com to get information on IEPs. It takes time to get through the evaluations. Even though my daughter failed most of last year, they will not hold her back because of her learning disorders and ADHD. She is also very bright, but was failing. With the accommodations, behavior plan and her meds she is now getting As and Bs and is no longer depressed and anxious about school (although it is still "boring").

I'm glad you found us.  You are definitely not alone.  I'm glad you are going to ask the school for an evaluation.  In addition to what the others have advised, I think you should also get an independent eval from a neuropsychologist ASAP (before the school eval) to uncover any and all potential learning disabilities your daughter might have.  The school evals really aren't completely thorough.   The good thing is that you will get a very thorough exam for your dd and find out exactly her strengths and weaknesses cognitively.  The downside is that it is on your own dime.  For us, insurance covered it, and I was very surprised that they did!

Looking to the future a few months:  It's also good to have a neuropsych on your "team" to back you up if you have to request school interventions and accommodations for your daughter.   I know this is a lot of info to digest, but it will really help you, and most importantly, your daughter, to have a professional sitting with you at your first IEP meeting.  Good luck, and keep us posted!

Terried - you need to get an IEP.   Call the school and tell them you want them to start the process NOW!  My son's IEP has modifications like extended time on tests - including the state tests!  He also can go to a different room to take the test to minimise distractions.  He can take some tests verbally and a teacher/aide will scribe for him.  For essays he is allowed to use the computer.  His non-state exams are sometimes shortened.  He has an aide in every classroom that helps him stay on task and will intervene if need be.  Of course to the rest of the class thinks she is there to help them all - even my son thinks that.  This has made a huge difference.  He is a smart guy but was not able to show due to his problems.  It is still challenging, harder for him then most kids - but with these tools in place he is able to stay with his class.

You have to take control of the situation and become your child's strongest advocate.  This is a great place to start - a lot of information.  Educate yourself as much as possible.  Take a deep breath, try not to focus on what you can not control and then pick up the reins to your child education!  <<hugs>>  I know it isn't easy.

Good Morning, Thank you guy for all your advise, and I will use it. It's always nice to know that someone cares about  our children and their parents. I will absolutly keep you posted on our progress, and please keep in touch.

You all have a great day and I will pray for us all.Smile
