after a year we took my son off strattera, it was making him aggitated, violent and uncontrolable.  So much so that last year he got suspended from school for three days, for hitting a teacher and threatening to kill her and the class.  After that happen I told his doctor to remove him from the strattera and start clean.

That's when he finally put him on Prozac and Concerta.

Our 7 year old, had the same problems with stimulents.. He is on Strattera, we noticed his angery and defiance improved right away. On this drug, you can see a immediate response to compulsive behavior, the attention part takes up to a month. Both our dr. feel he has more impulse control and the attention part is secondary for him. How is he doing now on the strattera?

My son is on dexedrine and clorodine, The y are so not working. And hes fine (a little mouthy) at home but in school its pure warfare. He hates the kids the school the teachers everything. I hope it gets better soon or I'm going to need medication

My son almost 6 was the same .... and he is still the same without the medicine.

We went trhu ALL the meds. except Strattera.... All of them....also combined with tenex and Clonidine...   The only one that has help a lot is Metadate CD. 30mgs only lasts about 5-6hours in his system. so we give him another 10mgs about 4 hours later and he is perfect...I mean *perfect* during the school day. Its like a miracle drug.    I did a lot of reaserch and wanted to tried this particular medicine after reading alot in forums and posts on other sites and the Doctor said...sure lets try it... and BINGO !!

Concerta helped too ..alot..but unfortunately I had a very hard time with him swallowing the pill.  So I gave up... and the Metadate works. The only down side is the duration of it.

I wish you luck.  I have been there......4 years...Been kicked out of about 4-5 pre-schools......  I will get better once you find the right medicine. But it may take a little while to figure it out.

Keep us posted on his progress.

Check this boards out.... They have help me ALOT !!

Without the s after miller.

It might be a good idea to check out the alternatives to meds section here also. If he can't handle the meds, there are other options to try, so don't give up. Personally, I love what Omegas did for my son. Other things work for other kids, depending on the kid.

I'll pray you find the right solution for your son.

have him checked by a neurologue,it does sound more than ADHD.

I really feel for you and your son. Has the psychiatrist ruled out bipolar? Sometimes these kinds of reactions to meds indicates the diagnosis is not correct. It can be very difficult to diagnose bipolar in kids and many are first diagnosed as ADHD. I really hope the strattera works for your son. Have you requested a meeting for a 504 with the school. Your son should have a behavior plan at school to help deal with his behavior (not just transfer him). Go to wrightslaw.com to the behavoir section:

Thank you for responding. Tonight we are starting on 10 mg for five days going to 20 for 5 days and then a final 40 for our target dose.  At this point I don't care about attention I just don't want him to be aggressive in school.  I don't want him kicked out!  I am so scared....

The Tenex has helped but has not completely obliterated aggression.

Thanks for responding...any one else with advise.  It would really be apreciated...

Hi I am new to this forum my son is 6 (just turned 6) and in first grade.  He has been recieving CSE services since 3.  He was diagnosed at 3 with ADHD.  He is a wonderfully special boy who does great at home with us.  When we get him into a school envirnment he falls apart.

He is in an inclusion class and did well in Kindergarden last year

The first day of first grade he had a masive meltdown during an art project. He sat crying under a desk!

During the same week he fliped over the whole class missing snack.  During this incident he flipped chairs and broke a bird house on the teachers desk.

I relented and asked our ped for meds.  He perscibed Adderall 5mg once a day.  We noticed that he was a bit irriated and sad.  At times he was tearful and easily annoyed.  He had serveral incidents of crying out burst and flipping chairs.

Our ped increased dose to 10 mg and the day we did that he really lost it.  In the afternoon call it major rebound I guess he was sweating, pupils dialated and he was threatening to run out of the school.  He was highly agitated.  (Never have I saw my child like this)

We got him off Addreall and to a pschiatirst who gave us RX for Foclin very small dose.  The morning we gave it to him he was very agiated and aggressive.  He threatened to kick out window of our car.  (Really off the way behavior for him!)

Got him off Foclin and went to Tenex.  Great results with that but still a bit aggressive in school two incidents this week.  He pushed a friend on lunch line and on another day during an agrument with a peer spit in his face.

School is saying that if he has one more aggressive incidnet in three weeks they are going to seek an alternative placement!!!  (Oh god help me! ) I am so worried

Now DR asked us to start Strattera. We did tonight 10mg?

I am so afraid that it will make him aggressive like the other ones!  Please help me and respond to my post I feel so all alone in this.

He is a wonderful child I love him and want him to be happy.

You have just my son at the age of 6 before meds entered our life, and changed it for the better. WE had all the same problems with adderall, especially the dialated pupils, he was high!  We love concerta and are very happy with it! We even ADDED stratterra to his daily meds. so that something was in his system at all times, however, it made my son very depressed and he wanted to kill himself at the age of 8, so we stopped that med. and he is fine. My son is 9 and takes 72 mgs. of concerta along with guanfacine which helps his overstimulation.

I do agree that you may want to check out a possibility of bipolar, however, it could also be that your son has never been on the right med. for him and at the best dose for him as well.

My son was never aggressive, just impulsive, but all the kids at school didn't like his behavior, so he got teased.  Finding the right med and dosage is so important.

Hang in there!!

I agree with Vickie.  My son has a condition similiar to bipolar, and has similia reactions to stimsHello. I just wanted you to know that my son was diagoned with adhd when he was three. He has been on many diffrent drugs since then. Some backed fired on us. And one of them was straterra.Every child is diffrent. We found the best one for him is concerta. And recently he was put on abilify. We also tried the new patch daytrana. That totally backed fired on us. You have to keep trying intil you find the right one for him. I come to realize there is no mircle drug. I still have trouble with my son. The psyicrist said he won't grow out of this. Because i told the DR that people said he will grow out of this. Well i have been waiting 8 years and he has not grown out of this. I have to say though. The say he is very good in school. I was glad to hear that. I think it is because he has a male teacher this year. This is the best he has ever acted at school. I am grateful for that. Well i hope this helped a little. Good luck Nerak. Also I hope you have good communication with the teachers if so let them know of your concerns as well and if they know you are trying he may be less likely to be kicked out.  Last year communication was terrible for us the teacher was a jerk this year I am proud to say the teachers are awsome. Are you seeing his pediatrician for medication or are you seeing a specialist?  I think you need to see a specialist such as a developmental pediatrician, a child psychiatrist or neurologist.  Is there more than ADHD going on or is it his only diagnosis?  His behavior sounds beyond ADHD to me.  Flipping out when there is an unexpected change in plans is a red flag.  Another poster mentioned bipolar, I'm thinking there is a possibility of ASD and/or sensory integration dysfunction also.  You may want to get his diagnosis confirmed by another doctor just to be sure.

Hey Michelle,

My son is 5 and just diagnosed as ADHD about 2 months ago.  I can't offer any help, but I can offer empahty...

You are NOT alone on this issue... he was suspended 4 times in 2 weeks and been kicked out of 2 after school programs...  he's torn up classrooms, the principle's office, given kids bloody noses, one day it took THREE adults to restrain him, his latest and greatest was he broke a glass door...

It's like they just flip, and there's no controlling them or getting through to them until they come out of it with some time...

We're on 5mg of Ritalin 3 times a day right now, going to have a med consult on Tuesday.

Though public school aren't allowed to kick kids out (I thought)... so what is this "alternate placement" that they are seeking exactly?

Keep in mind that Straterra will take 4-6 AFTER reaching the target dose(1.2-1.8mgs per kilo2.2lbs of body weight) to see results. So you are not going to see anythng 'instant' with Straterra like you see with Adderall and Focalin.

Straterra at the wrong dose, too high or too low is known for causing mood issues, so make sure you are giving the right dose once you are finished ramping it up.

Straterra will take 4-6 WEEKS after, sorry been a LONG day

Okay just an update from me....he has been romoved from school he kicked his one to one aid.  The strattera was a no go.  It did nothing for inattention and clearly nothing for aggressive systems.w

He is currently on home instruction and the school is providing us wtih a tutor once a day.

I am meeting with the CSE today at 1:45 to discus alternate placement.  They are looking at programs for ED kids!!!!  I am just so shocked.

We are working with a psychiatrist who has ruled out Bipolar....I almost wish it was bipolar so that I could get the right med for him.  this morning I am back with the tenex and Foclan XR 5mg.  He seems very hyper on it but was very happy and able to get through work with the tutor without issue.

Any suggestions would help.  thank goodness I found this forum

Don't let the special ed thing scare you. Nate just started in the class this week. It is in his iep. Because he needs one on one teaching.. My DH is still getting over it.. but, he is in a class with 6 boys 70% of the day and goes to a 1st grade class for specials and for science, social studies.. You have to find an environment that your son can learn in. It is a shock to hear it, but, if that is what's best for him.. Nate didn't get violent at school on the stims. but he was at home.. we are lucky the strattera helps his impulsive behaviors...
