Focalin XR Please review... | ADHD Information
My DS has been on Foculin XR 15mg in the am and 10mg in the afternoon x 1 year. The only side effect we have seen has been the weight loss. We have countered that by giving him Ensure and Milk shakes as well as protein snacks. He is doing MUCH better. I wish you luck.5 mg a day with a nutritional diet of low carbs and high protein have been the trick for my son and play therapy... we are completely pleased with the results we have seen for our son
He has had no side effects and we will have been using this med for almost a year.
I was also very nervous to start meds but we have had such great results, im glad i did it.
My son has been on Focalin since Feb. and the XR form since Sept. We started off with 5 mg of focalin and it worked for a while then in sept we that noticed it was not working then we went on the XR and went up to 10 mg a day. It would last till noon so he now gets the 10mg(XR) in the morning and 5mg (reg) in the afternoon. The only side effect we have seen was the loss of appitite. Like others have said give it a try and if its not working dont be afraid to call the dr and let them know. Good Luck!!!

My daughter was on Focalin XR for about 6 months. It has been great for her. She hasnt had any behavioral issues since school started. The only problem was it wore off at 3 and evenings have been a bear. We have switched to Daytrana recently to get coverage into the evenings.BPQW - thanks for the reminder about bedtime. We have seen M have a little bit harder time falling asleep - but last night he was asleep by about 8:30 (was in bed by 7:45) and I had to open his door this morning to "coax" him awake at 6:45. He was not up at all during the night, as he sometimes is.
My son was on focalin xr 10 mg for over a year. His only side affect was a vocal tic of clearing of his throat, mostly at night. We took him off a few weeks and it went away and never came back.
Honestly, I didn't notice any difference with him and now he's not on any meds.
We started Focalin XR a week ago on Saturday - his attention and focus have increased at school, but he has been a bit more physically hyper. We are hoping that his body is just getting used to the stimulant and that this will subside.
We started on 5mg but increased to 7.5 mg yesterday.
He rebound at night has been difficult - I think that he"feels funny" when the meds wear off and it freaks him out, and he will run around and thrash around and be crazy. But, he didn't do it last night, and didn't do it Sat night, so again, I am hoping that he will become more accustomed to it.
Only side affects are a little bit of a decreased appetite, and the rebound. We went to a snowmobile show yesterday - lots of people, generally noisy, etc. and he did very well. stayed with us, played the little snowman game they had at the booths, etc. We were very pleased.
We've been using Focalin XR for a few months now and have little side affects. His appetite is somewhat supressed, but usually only at lunch and a little at supper, but we let him eat a BIG bedtime snack. Still gets 10 hours of sleep and no rebound.Hello Everyone!
My 6 yr old son starts on Focalin XR tomorrow I am scared to death. Has anyone put their child on Focalin XR? What should I expect?

My son started on Focalin XR 9 days ago. The first day I was so nervous I wanted to throw up...LOL....I only give him 5 mgs a day. His teacher said that the first couple of days were AWESOME ! She noticed an immidiate difference ! The last few days have been *so-so* so I think I may need to up his dose to 10 mgs. I haven't noticed any side effects AT ALL !!
Focalin is one isomer of methylphendiate (which is in ritalin, concerta, daytrana, etc). So basically it is a more refined methylphenidate. Everyon responds differently to the different meds. The most frequent side effects are appetite suppression and sleep issues. My daughter is on Concerta. Hopefully you will get other responses soon.
