Hi, I have a very basic question. My daughter is 9, but I have not really come out and said...."Hey, you have ADHD, without hyperactivity, but with inattentiveness and impulsiveness."
She has had a thorough cognitive test and as you all maybe aware, everything is lumped into ADHD regardless of hyperactivity or not.
What I have explained to her is that people all learn differently, and she is just need to "catch up" and work on memory skills, and that her medication helps her brain focus to achieve that and keep her interest to get through her work.
I don't want to label her, but what have others said to their young kids about ADHD? Just want to know what is best to keep her confidence and self-esteem at the highest we can.
There are books out there to help her understand, my daughter is only 6 almost 7. I took her cues like she knows she has trouble focusing and sitting still and I explained it to her in her terms that it is how she was born and understand things are harder for her and everyone is different in his/her own way. I also looked online for books for her to read and yes I did just tell her about ADHD and taught her to keep it secret from friends who may not understand. So far so good.I also tell her i love her no matter what and that she is an awsome girl.
