Melatonin not helping me sleep at all. | ADHD Information
I am going crazy.. For the past week every night I have woke up at 2:00 in the morning and not been able to go to sleep. I started taking the melatonin about 4 days ago and have not improved. I have had a terrible time falling asleep in the past and then the 2:00 wake up time happened to come about a month ago. Any suggestions on why the melatonin is not working? I am taking one 3mg pill about 20 min before I want to go to sleep.
Well, I do not know why you are waking up at 2 am obviously, but as far as melatonin use goes, I have a little bit of experience with it. I started taking melatonin after searching for ways to help me stay asleep if I knew I had a big day the next day. The first bottle I purchased was 2 mg and would really help me to GET to sleep, but I would wake up several hours later and be wide awake. I spoke at length to the owner of a natural food store where I lived and he suggested extended release melatonin. I tried it at 2 mg and it kept me asleep the whole 7-8 hours with no morning groggyness. I have only been able to find extended release in specialty stores and amazon though.
Another tip is that if you do wake up after taking melatonin, do not turn on any lights. Melatonin is actually a natural chemical that your body produces at night time. I am not as articulate as him, but the doctor that explained it to me stated essetially that light to the eyes distroys the melatonin and makes it harder to go back to sleep. If you need light, he said to have a low watt night light in the hall or bathroom.
Good luck!
