When my DS started Ritalin he was thin but now he is skinny he weights 44 pounds and has 6 years old. how about your?
DR. says he is Ok not to worry, he does not eat that much and I am worried. He is always active he never tells my that he is tired .
Do I have to worry or not?????
My son has never been thin and so far he hasn't lost any weight on his meds, but I make sure that whatever he eats 1) has lots of nutritional value, and/or 2) has lots of calories. Try to make him eat protein at every meal and push the chocolate milk. We've had to define meals as a time when you eat to nourish your body whether or not you are hungry. I know that flies in the face of what we want most kids to do, eat only when you are hungry, but our kids have different issues to think about. Don't be afraid to cook with olive oil, it's a "good" fat that will add some needed calories to your son's meal. Hope this helps.
My son is thin too ...the 15th percentile for his age. He is now 47 1/2 pounds at age 7. Our doc was also not worried and said he was healthy. I also push the calories whenever I can.
My 10yo daughter is 58lbs. She has always been thin (from her father's genes). The meds made her lose weight initially, but we found how to keep weight on her now. She has always prefered vegies over protien. I use the promise of ice cream after a meal to get her to eat some chicken or fish with her vegies.
My DS (7) has stopped eating his lunch.. Brings it all home. He weighs 50lbs. I make sure he gets decent food from the food groups. My other son who is not ADHD, is 6 and still does not weigh 40lbs.. we watch what he eats as, he is growing and not gaining weight.. I give them drinkable yogorts and things like that with calcium and have a good amount of calories in them. As long as your offering them healthy food, and they are eating something he should be ok.Thanks gals, for this I am always worrying and try to push up calories when he tells he wants french fries I make some but the thing that he never have being a good eater.
My sisters son is 15 and 170 pounds - he has been on meds since he was 5.
She has told me that when he has gone through his times of not wanting to eat due to the meds that she tries to get him to eat a very good breakfast before the meds kick in - she would make him eggs and such. She also brings out the chololate milk, and has him eat later in the evening when he is hungry again.
I have also heard of people giving their kids ensure, and other high calorie, high nutrient drinks in the morning.
I am trying to send my son a "drinky yogurt" every day in his lunch - I figure he may not want to eat but he may drink that.
I also am making sure that I make good, big breakfast for him on the weekends, as weekdays can get busy!
My son is 7 and weighs 42 pounds. My dr said he is healthy...I have never had this problem, the stims actually cause an appetite increase in my dd, and that alone has caused a weight problem.I have a skinny one also. She is 48" and 50 lb. She has been struggling to reach 50 lb. all year! One thing she will eat a lot of that has a ghastly amount of calories is doughnuts. We don't do this often, but once in a while I'll buy a bunch of doughnuts and dd will eat 5 for breakfast. We also do the carnation instant breakfast. My 5 y/o is 36lbs. He is a very picky eater and has always been but I give him carnation instant breakfest drink with his breakfest in the morning because I know he does not eat much at school (he brings his lunch home almost everyday). His dr also said that he was healthy and not to worry too much unless he suddenly drops a lot of weight. My ds is quite skinny also. He is almost nine and about 58 lbs. You can count his ribs. But he eats lots and lots. I read on one post to give your child pediasure or ensure and try to mix in protein powder. Or to give them protein bars. If your child isn't eating very much maybe that will make you feel better. Of course talk to your doc................
my ds (10) lost 20 lbs (7yo 85 lbs to 65lb) in about 6 mo after being on concerta - he went from chubby to skinny (needed to lose a pound or two but NOT 20 . We gave him carnation instant breakfast with whole milk when he wasn't hungry
and he's slowly went up to 69 lbs but eats like a horse most days.
My 6 year old daughter is 45 inches and has been at the threshold of 40lbs for months. She could go all day without thinking of eating until she is starving and then she gets grumpy. Sometimes I just put food in her mouth and she will chew and swallow it. She doesnt like to sit and eat cuz it takes away from playtime. I also give her ensure plus. It has a ghastly amount of calories and is totally gross, but she likes it. Whatever works.
Our doc is very concerned about medication and growth. He advocates for less meds in favor of not suppressing appetite.
my son is also a skeleton,he is 7 and weighs 40 lbs,he is the 5th percentile.i know he does'nt eat much at school but at home whatever i can get in him is a calorie.tamanian devil, my son is like that until he is having bad stomach aches he tells me that he is hundry. I put him lunch everday day to school and he rbings everything back. And Dr. says he is healthy but I don't know if I worry too much.Hello, My son is adhd and is on medication now for the past 3 years, He was started on Metadate CD which is an 8 hour capsule. and took it for three years and has done nothing but put the weight on. Just last month the dr. switched him to concerta 12 hour capsule, because the Metadate cd 8 hour was not lasting through the last hour of class. Now that he is on concerta 36 MG he started loosing weight and has no apatite. I am watching him close and if this continues i will put him back on the Metadate cd. I just really liked the Metadate much better. and wanted to let you all know that it was out there So you might want to ask your doctor about it and see what he says, it can't hurt to try. Just my way of trying to help.
Good luck and have a blessed day! &n bsp; berkell
