im 16 yrs old w/ add+adhd. at times i show symptons of being bi-polar. its quite common now with adhd because if anyone's done the research.
seratonin is a factor in this, and if anyone knows their neurotransmitters... seratonin is the one aflicted with moods. it counts for why you can go from being happy to snappy in 1 second. its probably influenced by the whole adhd being the imbalance of dopamine, norepinephrin, and serotonin with the whole maintaining homeostasis game.
if anyone wants to read up more on this

that is where i got my info from.
My 14 yr son is ADHD. I'm noticing signs of Bi-Polar as well and wondering if its possible for him to have both of them? what type of testing is done for Bi-Polar?
Does anyone out there have a child with both?
thanks
funny, I asked the same question a few posts down. I have a six year old who has terrible mood swings in the afternoon and I don't know if this is an adhd thing, a coming off meds thing, a bi-polar thing or a simple boy thing. Frustrating isnt it?

It is posible to have both. Due to the difficulty in diagnosing bipolar in kids, some kids are initially diagnosed with ADHD, only to later be changed to bipolar. A child psychiatrist or neuropsych can diagnose bipolar and help sort out the two if needed. Here is some info:
I am 23 yrs old and have both bipolar disorder I and ADHD
All my life i've been the kid no one wants to have but been fortunate enough to have understanding parents. Anyway, i wasn't diagnosed with either until not long ago when i had a manic episode that was completely insane! Without going into the details, unless you want to know, i was taken to the hospital and there was no doubt that i have bipolar (even though i tried to deny it for many months after). Then i noticed that there was still something wrong and that i couldn't concertrate on anything and that's the way i've always been. I spoke to my psychiatrist and found that i also have ADD which explained a lot! the prevelance of ADDers among Bipolars is higher then bipolars among ADDers.
Take your son to a neurologist or psychiatrist and DO NOT feel obligated to stay there if you're not satisfied with the quality of the doctor.
Thanks for all the response I received. I have an appt for tomorrow with the Psy.
My son has difficulty concentrating and is very impulsive he is on concerta 54mg, which may need to be increased. His mood swings are tremendous. His behavior is hard to understand often he is intentionally cruel to people and shows no regret at the time but later on will act like nothing happened. Sometimes its difficult to know what is adhd or what might be bi-polar. or what might be adolescent behavior.
Thanks everyone for all your help and information. I took him to the Psychaitrist
yesterday and she came to the Bi-Polar conclusion along with the ADHD. She also increased his concerta and she put him on Depakote. I am hopeful that these medications will help him..time will tell
youtalkinto_me, the best thing to do is first to get the right doctor and the right medication. It's also about therapy but more than anything, the reason i'm doing great is that i had unconditional support from my parents and never once let me overstep my boundaries due to my 'disorders'. You might feel sorry for her and want to be with her every step of the way but instead, you should let her walk knowing you'll be there. Bottom line, either she becomes responsible now (and it doesn't have to mean a bad thing) or she will depend on you so much she'll feel weak when and if you're not around.
I am really impressed by how much you care. Everyone should have parents as loving as you.
