HELP!!!!! | ADHD Information

Right now my son is only seeing his ped., he was only diagnosed last year, but it seems like with every med we try it just makes things worse. Before I was just dealing pretty much with a hyper child, now things are just getting out of hand.  I tried calling a specialist who deals with nothing but ADHD, and was told the earliest she could see my son would be April.. UGH!!

I suggest you find a neurologist. My son was diagnosed by a neurologist after multiple medical and psychological tests. He was diagnosed adhd and precribed strattera. It isn't that I am completely satisfied with this med, but I really haven't seen those kinds of side effects in my son. You better look for another opinion. If you have to wait long, be patient  and wait so you can have a better outcome. I also had to wait for my son's appointment with the neurologist for about 2 months.

Good luck and have all my support!!

Today, I had about all i could take with my sons behavior since starting Strattera.  He has turned into a little thief.  He is taking odd things(including my make-up and destroying it), things from school that he says he "found" but I would later learn he took..  His school work is coming home not even touched, he has been getting in trouble, etc.  He's also playing with things that are harmful. We caught him tonight with an extension cord, some old Christmas lights I had in a drawer, and a fingernail file.. I have no idea what he was even thinking with that.

So I called the doctor and he said to stop the strattera, and leave him off the meds until his next appointment wich is Nov. 22nd, and to call if things get to out of control with him.

My question is, since he has tried now 3 medications, and none have helped him, I'm thinking maybe he was diagnosed with ADHD, when in reality there is something else going on with him.  I would think one of the 3 meds he was on would of helped, not made him act worse.

What are some things I can ask the doctor to look for? Or test for? To make sure he is treating him for the right thing...

I feel totally stressed out this week.. I just wish I could help him, but I feel like the things we have been giving him is only making him worse..

Stressed iN PA big time.

What type of doctor does you son see? A child psychiatrist (not psychologist) or neuropsych can best diagnose and manage medication. Failue on meds (if they were prescribed correctly at the best dose and watching for rebound, etc.) is an indication that more may be going on (as you are thinking). Waiting until Nov. 22 seems like a long time, but it gives time to get the strattera out of his system. If you are not seeing child psychiatrist or neuropsych, I would suggest you start finding one. It can take time to find one that is taking new patients but will be well worth it (getting a reliable diagnosis + someone well versed in med management).

I am sorry you are going through this, my thoughts are with you.

Where are you in PA? I am in the Valley Forge area. I know of several specialist. I do know all these meds, turn on parts of the brain that may be a "asleep" or jazz them up. This is how it has been explained to me and makes since. So you might not have found the right one for him. I like our pedi a lot, but these are specialized meds.. I to can't stand the wait for a month answer... that is bs..

I completely know where you are coming from.  Both my husband and I work for the hospital here.  So we have certain doctors to choose from or we end up paying more.  Honestly we couldn't afford anything more right now.  Brandon has tried strattera, concerta, adderrall, and ritalin.  The ritalin was the las thing with positive or some positive results.  The others seemed to either not do anything or too much.  We are now on daytrana and everything is well.  Understand, it has taken us more than three years to get to a "comfortable med zone".  I would love to take Brandon to see a neuropsych but they are FAR away.  We have seen his pediatrician and a child psychiatrist.  Good luck!!

Oh and take a deep breath everyonce in awhile.  Or ten or twenty!!!!!

I am in Hershey. My hubby works at the Hershey Med Center so we have to use their physicians, which isn't always a great thing because the waiting period to get into see these doctors is outrageous!!It is possible he doesn't have ADHD and has a learning disability that mimicks ADHD.  Dyslexia, sensory, auditory, and visual processing disorders all have identical symptoms.  Unfortunately I've been to 5 Docs and neither can give me an affirimative diagnosis for my son and it's driving me crazy. My son started out on Adderall, then was switched to concerta, then switched to strattera...

have u tried concerta? when i was told to try strattera, it to me was like a sugar pill and did absolutely no good for me. like i keep saying. the answer isnt yelling and being frustrated with your children with adhd/add, its knowing what's CAUSING this things. its the imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, the main ones that factor self control, impulsivity, moods, and hyperactivity. sometimes we just can not controll these things and it may only seem we are being ignorant to test your buttons.

back to the forum, try a stronger med, i mean try something thats going to keep him HUSHED for a while sounds wrong, but it worked for me. its helped alot with getting a's and b's in honors classes for high school

also, i've noticed and from personal experience, being a kid of adhd/add is going to be more challenging for parents. the whole defient, destructive behavior is just part of it. it for me mellowed out when i actually "grew up" and started maturing
