Day Treatment Center | ADHD Information

Hi all,

My son's phychiatrist has just recommended that I enroll him in a day treatment center.

Basically, the mornings are spent in class.  The afternoons are for therapy, learning social skills, anger management etc.. He would attend for 90 days, then he would be re-evaluated.

Just wanted to know if anyone else has had their child in a similar program, and what kind of successes and/or furstrations and failures they might have experienced.

Thanks!

Is this a behavior room (ED) run by the county mental health department?

Is the psychiatrist private or provided via the mental health department?

Is your child in mainstream?

Not sure what you mean by behavior room or ED, but it is a seperate facility from the schools.  I suspect it is part of the OKC school district, as all of the teachers are apparently OKC teachers, and if you live within the district, the school district provides transportation to and from.

The psychiatrist we found privately, though I did find out today she is the psychiatrist who handles the rx management for the kids in the facility.  In conversatin today though, the lady gave me the impression that there weren't many referrals from the psychiatrist.

My son has been in mainstream (assuming you're speaking of class at school), though I have had him yanked out of school as much as in.  I've posted on a couple of previous boards about his violent outbursts.  Was suspended from schol 4 times in 2 weeks, though since meds took affect (only diagnosed about 7 weeks ago) he hasn't been suspended, but did continue to get sent to the Principal's Office on a regular basis, as well as was in a downward spiral before his last "episode".  This episode started at school and continued to after school and resulted in more violence and destruction.  Sent him to stay w/my grandmother until I could fine another after school (single mom, work full time, can't leave at 3 to pick him up).  Anyways, found another after school, which he subsequently got kicked out of as well due to violence.

I should probably mention he's only 5 years old, 6 in December.

Another note on who runs it.  Although the school district participates in it, it is paid for privately or through insurance, so I termed it wrong when I said "part of the OKC school system".

It sounds sort of like what my son is involved in. my son was the same way at 5. I know how you feel! Kindergarten was a nightmare.  (We had the honor of being the first parents in the county who had the police called in on thier 5 year old at school due to his extreme agression.)

He is now going to a special school although this is more of a school within a school.  its part of the public school system and run in a regular school however they cater specifically to children with emotional/behavioral needs. The classroom sizes are smaller (only 8 students in my sons class)with one teacher and two aides, they follow the same curriculum but with more one on one time, and the children also get therapy every day. The goal of the program is to eventually be able to transition the student back into a regular school setting. This is evaluated at every IEP meeting.

I would say if you have any worries or concerns (i had plenty!) make a request to tour the school and meet the teachers.  Once i did this i felt this was the place to put marsh in. Prior to it i was dead set against it.

i hope this helps. good luck!

azurebosque39016.520462963 Sounds basically like a *special* school we have in the uk seperate from Mainstream. My son has been permantley excluded from school after his anger/tantrum outbursts and im waiting on a place at one of these schools.I know someone who has had great sucess , her child isnt even on medication yet is behaving much better and focusing far more.I visited the school , and they have soft rooms where they can go and throw things about if need be and are actually rewarded for this. They have play therapy , light room therapy , music therapy.Tea parties where they have to learn to wait their turn and share etc, it seemed great to me.My son is 6 going into 7 and cant read or write his name yet as he cant sit still long enough to learn! Hope it works for you and if its only for 90 days what do you have to lose? cameronsmummy39016.5044212963
