Meds not working??? | ADHD Information

What kind of doctor is your son seeing? Sometimes when the meds do not work it is an indication that the diagnosis needs to be revisited. There is also a number of people for whom meds do not seem to work or who need a higher dose or a combo of meds. I do not see straterra on the list of meds you have tried. Here is a table of meds for your reference.

Hi. My son is 6 years old and we have tried all kinds of meds....ritalin, adderall, conserta, risperdal, tenex, zoloft........gosh doesnt that just sound awful.......??  He is now on Focalin XR 20mg and still the child is wild!! Not doing well in school and well uncontrollable most of the time. My son's pupils are so big sometimes, I wonder what in the Hell am I doing to him????!!!!!  His doc is weaning him from the zoloft and tenex because she feels they are making him "wilder"  ??

She has given me literature on Aspbergers (msp?) and Autism....but I dont think this fits him.  He is now pulling out his eyelashes and looks like he has cancer because his eyes are so bare!!  I love him dearly!!  But back to the med thing..the first time I got on here someone wrote to me and said "welcome to the medication roller coaster"   and how true they were. Anyway, you are not alone.

Hi, I hope someone out there can help me.... My 6 yr. old Jason was diagnosed a year ago. We have tried Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, nothing seems to work. We increased the Ritalin to 20, but the teacher tells me he still has troube focusing. The doctor tells me I should increase the meds, but the teacher says to wait...

He sometimes looks so sad to me. It is very worrisome. He is also, very shy. I know they say that ADHD and traits of Autism are very similar, my question is , if his only trouble in school is focusing, and I have been told that is the only thing holding him in Sp. ED. then why arent the meds doing what they are suppose to do... Dosent 30mg of Ritalin sound like alot???

Help

JaysMom,

We also went through the medication roller coaster.  The doc started out with regular Adderall and this seemed to knock him out and it scared me so we went to regular ritalin, then concerta, then strattera with concerta, then strattera by itself, then focalin with strattera ( terrible combo) and then finally Adderall XR....BINGO the adderall XR did the trick and his behavior is amazing. He can focus on his school work, he does not have any behavior issues and he even can do his homework if we get home fast enough from school.  This took us about a year and a half until we got it  figured out.  Because I don't want to give him anymore stimulant meds I use magnesium for any evening activities. He also takes omega 3's.

jakezachsmom, So sorry you are having such a time finding the correct med, do you think the pulling eyelashes could be a tic brought on by the meds?  Focalin for us was the worst med of all.

Joesmom,

DS, is on strattera, working some, but he still isn't focused at school. What did you son take with that? He took a stimulant as well? We were told yesterday that he has been sitting in the back with his head in his hands.. during teaching time... or I guess you could say when he is to be lisenting.. I asked DS last night about it and if he can think.. He says yes, he thinks about coming home...

wmtmann...

My heart goes out to you and your boy!!!   I really hope that you can find the right combo for him.  I was fortunate that the first drug we tried worked well (if i could just get him to eat more...).

Good luck, I will keep you in my prayers.

wmtmann, my son took concerta with strattera and then a trial of focalin with strattera.  The concerta with strattera worked at the beginning but then his behavior got wierd ( moody, grumy, crying).   He was also have a terrible time with transitions.  It turned out that the strattera was not for him and he was much better when we stopped.  He is now on adderall XR and this is working wonders.  Medications can be so tricky .

good luck
