It’s grade card day...and I am HAPPY!!!!! | ADHD Information

Cool something positive instead of negative.

I am not sure I did it at all...the only thing different from last year is the meds. We still work on organizational issues, and strategies to help him to remember to turn in homework on time. ( a biggie for him) His self esteem is rising daily, and aside from some minor social issues and the non appetite, we are ecstatic here.  We always knew he was VERY smart...his vocab knocked the teachers down in 1st grade, and he always tested way above his grade level.  That was part of the reason that we (the teachers and hubby and I) were so frustrated when the day to day work and grades did not reflect it.

We spent years working with the teachers on methods of redirecting, and keeping him on task, but finally conceded defeat and got the dx and medicated him just this past March.  Now I wish we would have acted sooner, but live and learn...

Last night I ran into a parent of a former preschool student in the grocery and they had just come from the dr with a dx of ADD.  I have never made a secret of Chase's journey, and this mom came to me and asked me what she should expect...Chase happened to be with me and I had him tell the little girl how he felt, medicated vs. non medicated.  He looked at this little girl, and said "Oh, I feel so much calmer, I can concentrate so much better, and I remember things better, I never space out in class anymore".  You could see the relief on the girl's face (as well as the mom's).  I left the mom with my home phone # and told her there are good message boards (like this one) where we parents can get together and share.

Woohoooo!!

I know I am new here, but am so happy for him!  How are you going to celebrate?

That is SUPER!!!!

So, tell us, how did you do it.......WE WANT TO KNOW!!!!

Chase got his grade card today, and he has no grade under 90%!!!!  Our school went from the normal 'letter grades' to a scale like the ones on the proficiency tests.  So, (stay with me here, it can get confusing) Advanced (3) is 89.5% - 100%, Proficient (2) is 74.5% - 89.4%, Basic (1) is 67.5% - 74.4%, and Limited (0), is 0% -67.4%.

Chase's grades:  drumroll please......

Social Studies 94% (3)  English 91% (3) Math 99% (3) Reading 90%(3) Science 93% (3) and #3's in Art, Music, and Phys Ed.

Now there are some 1's and 2's in some areas of some subjects, but his grades are overall so good that these didn't lower it much, and miracle of miracles....NO CHECKMARKS in the behavior section (you know 'waits for turn to talk, expresses feelings appropriately....') A first for him!!!

Soo...if we were using the NORMAL grading system THAT WOULD BE STRAIGHT A's!!!!!!  We used to be relieved when he got straight C's!!!!

I am doing my happy dance!!!!

YAHOOOO!!!! We are celebrating tonight!!!

Oh forgot...think we are goin out for pizza...maybe a movie this weekend?  Whatya think?

Yea for Chase!!!!

That is just wonderful!  Thanks for sharing your success!  I'm doing the happy dance for you!

That is terrific!   Congratulations Chase!!!

time to celebrate!

I explained to Chase that if he were getting letter grades, these would be straight A's, and he threw his arms in the air and said "Yes!!!!!"  I told him that I was proud of him and asked him how he felt.  He got a very satisfied look on his face and said "I feel goood!"  While shaking his head up and down in a confident nod. This poor kid had to follow a brother through school (3 years older, small school, we are the only ones in our town with our last name...inescapeable) that has had nothing lower than an occasional B his whole academic career...don't think the teachers compare (nor do we), but I am sure that he has. I mean he is here when we are going over grade cards for Jake too.  Jake's isn't here yet...he's in middle school and they mail those.  I usually have no worries there though.

His self satisfaction is better than the good grades for me I think.

I am gonna sleep goood tonite.

The pizza was yummy....gonna go see a movie tomorrow.

Well, congratulations!! I feel really happy for your son and your family. My son's report card is still far away, is for December; but I also hope to go for pizza!!!! Your post is really inspiring and helps me keep going on. This is what I really love of these boards; they are not only support tools but also encouraging ones. Today I feel very tired and really wanted to go to bed, but it is almost impossible to go to sleep without turning on my computer and coming here.

Thanks to all af you and again, congratulations!!!!

Yaaaaay Chase!

Your story sounds like mine!  Just substitute Patrick for Chase.  We started on the patch the day before school started and have terrific results!

Pat types a lot of his assignments because he has dysgraphia and fine motor skill probs.  Then we e-mail to teachers!  He takes in a paper copy too, but if he forgets to hand it in, the teacher has a copy on her e-mail.
I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU,WE ALWAYS WONDER IF YOU DO THE RIGHT THING WHEN WE DECIDE TO MEDICATE BUT WHEN YOU READ HOW HAPPY YOU AND YOUR SON ARE,IT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE.

Chase sister (home from college to go to a dance something or other with the OTHER older sis in Chicago) went into his room to congratulate him on his grades this morning before she left for the drive, and she said he is still beaming!  She said she teared up and almost cried she is so happy for him.  Hope that this lasts.....waiting for the other shoe to drop...you all know how that is.  Parent teacher conferences are next week, so we shall see...

Thanks all
