SSI and SSD are two totally different programs. SSI is Supplemental Security Income and SSD is Social Security Disability. One could be apply for SSD if the person worked before they were disabled. One could apply for SSI if either they didn't work long enough to have "insured status" or if it's a person is a minor child.
In order to be eligible for SSI, the person must meet two criteria's. One being that the person is so mentally imparied that it affects their ability to function in all areas of life and second, the person must meet the financial criteria meaning the house hold income must be low enough to qualify. If both these criteria's are not met, more than likely the person will be denied. SSI is not awarded just because the child has a disability. SSI is awarded when the child is deemed incapable of functioning in a normal capacity and as a resut of that, down the road unable to hold a job and support themselves. Even if the child is deemed totally mentally impaired, if the parents income is above the federal guidelines, the child will be denied. The federal government doesnt award people money just because they have a disability but rather its based on the level of impairment the disability causes and again, the financial criteria must be met as well.
Macsmom....if your child is awarded SSI, he would automatically get medicaid as well and medicaid would pick up the medical costs as long as you go to doctors that accept medicaid. However, a diagnosis of ADHD standing alone very rarely gets approved because it is not considered a menatlly debilitating disorder unless there are other co existing disorders along with ADHD that would render the child incapable of functioning in a normal capacity.
Luvmykids0239019.0167361111I have heard it is hard to get. That is probably why I drag my feet about applying. But I do know a few people who have received it for kids and themselves with adhd. So it can be done. But like it has been said it is worth a shot, and the worst they can say is no. A friend of mine at work said that when you have a child diagnosed with something such as ADHD or ADD, you can get aid from the state....or something liek that. Is this true? It sure would help with med bills as Mac's dad doesnt help with anything medical due to teh fact that he thinks his son is fine and needs no help and doesnt HAVE adhd....idiot backwoods redneck that he is. Anyone know about htis?I haven't heard that, but I'm still laughing at you calling your ex a "idiot backwoods redneck." sorry, that just struck me as funny.
Yes, here in the uk its called DLA, means 'disability living allowance', but if you get it there you may not get much as he is abled, i get for mikey becoz he is distructive & has other problems & he is also asbergers. Thanks joemom.
You can apply for sss benefits for dependents with a disability. I have looked it up but haven't applied yet and they list adhd as a disability.[QUOTE=Aaron'smom]You can apply for sss benefits for dependents with a disability. What is SSS?
This is interesting that they consider it a disability, but the schools don't, just an impairment.
I don't know anything about the disability thing except that on another board (that I don't really visit anymore....I love this one too much) someone said that ADHD claims are almost always denied.
I am sorry about your ex...but at least he IS an ex...one thing to be thankful for!
As for affording the meds..he is on concerta right? Well, my hubby and I (luckily he ISNT 'a idiot backwoods redneck') are self employed and can only afford major medical insurance...no prescription coverages and Chases meds would cost me 8 a month. We would pay it somehow, but it would be not fun.
I first called the PPA (partnership for prescription assistance) that advertises on tv all the time, but for some reason that escapes me now, they had nothing to help me.
So, I got kinda mad, and got on the internet and found that Macneil (who makes concerta) is somehow part of Johnson and Johnson, and got a phone # and called them and they have their own patient assistance program. They sent me a card and I get Chases medicine for FREE each month! Just present the card w/the script and voila! No charge.
Try it, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain....the # on my card is 1-800-652-6227, Let me know how you come out!
I second the social security disability. I had once tried applying for purchase of care vouchers and was denied. Naturally i was in tears and you'd think they would have mentioned trying to see if social security benefits might help him. It wasn't until a couple of years later i was told about it by a friend of a friend who works for the arc.
at this point i'm not really needing the assitance so i haven't looked into it as much but from what little i did read, i think he would have surely qualified, even to this day. Check it out. I think its worth a shot. I hope you'll get it!
