NewbieHello all! I am a 23 year old mother of one. He is a 3 year old little boy. He always seemed a little rambunctious but nothing too serious. His terrible 2's really were not that terrible. When he turned 3 it was if all hell broke loose. He stopped listening to me and my life partener. No matter what we asked of him or what kind of punishments we would give him he didn't seem to care. We talked to his pediatrician and she said that she did not notice much to do with him but she gave us a list of behaviorial psychologists for children his age. Of course she diagnosed him as a child with ADHD. I just about lost it. I cried so hard. I take ebough meds myself I don't need him to be taking meds all the time too. So we decided not to start him on meds until it starts to effect his school work. I dunno. Was anyone else's child diagnosed this early??? If yes, what did you do on the mmedication department???
My child was not diagnosed this young, but I always knew he as...issues...just didn't wanna open my eyes I guess. If you look at the Alternative methods of treatment section of this board, you will see many natural supplements and such to try. (just scroll down the list a bit...) I also think that getting him into some kind of behavioral therapy can't hurt. A therapist may be able to teach him different ways of coping to the feelings he can't control, and teach you ways of helping him control those feelings. I really resisted medicated my child as well, and tried everything that I (and the teachers) could think of to help my child in school. Some of it worked for a time, some not...but my child leans more to the inattentive, forgetful ADD, with only a short temper, and some minor social issues...he is not explosive. Hope this helps We were diagnosed at age 3 -- our pediatrician first then we pursued diagnosis with other professionals. She offered to prescribe meds and we chose to go the alternate route and have been very successful w/ supplements and diet modifications (I "second" checking out the Alternative board!)our son was diagnosed at 3 years and 9 months.we are trying the alternative route but with not much success.his psychologist won't even consider meds until he is 6,does not believe meds works at such a young age. and i agree with him,if it affectshis school, then i will consider it.i had to quit my job and my hubby and i never go out,the ER is our second home as my son has no sense of danger but we have been watching him 24/7 more or less so nothing major.i can't remember the last time he slept all night either. I wanted to thank everyone for the information. This Thursday we get to go and see his behaviorial psychologist. I most definately will ask her about some alternative medicine options for now.![]() [QUOTE=fireyfairymom]I wanted to thank everyone for the information. This Thursday we get to go and see his behaviorial psychologist. I most definately will ask her about some alternative medicine options for now. Just a warning -- many of our trained professionals are unaware of the benefits of supplements and/or diet modifications. We just don't teach that way in our schools! You may, if you want to pursue those routes, need to do the research on your own. My doctor told me that they didn't work -- she was wrong! IF your child is ADHD, then your discipline needs to be firm and consistent. Look at the marble thread by ogram at the top of the parent's board. Consistency is key to raising an ADHD kid. They don't make transitions very well and do much better when they know what to expect and what's expected from them. Oh, and if your doctor recommended meds right off for a 3yo, run as fast as you can away from that doc. Doing that is not smart medicine. My son is 5 yrs old, but I knew that something was wrong when he was about 3. Actually, you just described my son in your post! I let it go until now and his grades are suffering even in kindergarten. I have always been opposed to medication, so maybe that's why I waited. I am guessing that your son is sharp as a tack when it comes to smarts...so is mine, but if he can't concentrate to learn in school (not his fault, by the way), meds might be the best option. But to answer your question about waiting or not, I did wait because I didn't want to medicate until I knew for sure that there was no other option. Hope this helps. Susan Susan, Yea, my son is as sharp as a tack... the odd thing is that he caught on to car makes and models before his colors (still very far from getting those completely right) but he can count to 7, say his ABC's to "g" and then goes into his rendition of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". It wasn't until he put it together that I noticed the two had the same tune. Medication scares the living poo out of me though. I keep thinking of the zomie children of yesteryear with Ritlin. I know for some it works but for others no. I know that I suffer from insomnia and depression. Changing meds until I got the right combination was horrid... I would hate to put a 3 year old through that. At least I could tell what was and was not working for me, but how can you tell how a 3 year old is truly feeling on the inside??? This is such a scary ride. Kristen My dd was diagnosed at 2.5. Not with ADHD, but with developmental delays. In our case, we just got the interventions she needed. We didn't medicate until she started sinking in first grade. She was not one to be overly aggressive with others, though. |
