Doctors are all professionals. If one pedi doesn't work out then you try another pedi for a second opinion. Unfortunately, our medical profession has gotten out of hand for costs. I was one of the fortunate ones to be able to go to the doctor that is trained in this area of specialization. I can say that I wouldn't give up searching for the help my child needs.
I would call the psych doc every day and ask for any cancellations. Sometimes the squeaky wheel approach works...Good luck
joemom39025.4197337963So, we went to Jon's doctors appointment. You would never guess how HORRIBLE the appointment was! Aside from him running around the waiting room, he was completely UNCONTROLLABLE while waiting in the exam room for his doctor. When the doctor FINALLY came into the room, Jon was JUST calming down from his last tyraid, and I was bleeding. Jon had accidently head butted me and split my lower lip. I wasn't too happy about it, but I know he didn't mean to do it.
We talked with the doctor. He wasn't the doctor that Jon normally see's, it was one of the OLDER practice doctors (the main doctor of the practice). Anyhow, he asked for some information, and we gave it willingly. He then said that he would NOT prescribe anything because he wasn't a psychiatrist OR neurologist. However, when we (Jon's step-mom and I) said that we were told by Dr. Bob (jon's normal doctor) that he would discuss it with the Psychologist that recommended Prozac, and make any other recommendations towards medicine options, etc. if we didn't want Jon on Prozac. I personally don't, I'd rather have him on Concerta or something else. The Dr. continued to say he couldn't, so we left. It was a waste of an hour of our time, not to mention the .00 copay!!!
So, now, we are in the waiting game for our Psychiatrist appointment (it's towards the end of the month unless an earlier appointment opens up). I just wish there was something I could do at home besides the marble system.
Can anyone suggest what to do until we go in for the appointment? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

Also, take a look at the crawling post in another forum on this site (I think Alternate And Complementary Medicine). If Jon didn't crawl properly as a baby this is something you may want to look into.
He crawled at around 6/7 months (something along those lines) and he was walking by 9/10 months...he's an early achiever! So, I don't think that's any issue with him....
Actually, crawling for long enough and correctly is the issue. They say 6 months of crawling is best so your son crawled 3 months or 4 at best. In addition, how they crawled is important. Some folks are having success so worth looking into and best of all it can be free, if you pick up the book at your library. All you need to do is invest the time.
Here is a link that will give you the jest of the theory.
If you want to do a little test....if you don't have ADHD....get yourself on all fours and crawl. Note how you hold your head, how you move your hands and feet. Are they coordinated movements? Then get your son down on all fours and watch him. If he has a difficult time and says it is hard you may want to look into the book.
Hang in there.
im from australia, and here we have whats called effalex, u cam get it in tablet or oil form. they have had good success with it with kids with ADHD. im not sure if u have it over there, or whether its called something else. but that might help.
Would it help to get another doc appointment with the one that u have seen previously, sometimes if u dont get somewhere with one doc u can woth another especially if he said he was going to help in the first place.
Good luck.

Michelle, GNC does have "Attentive Child" which is working wonderfully for my DS. I couple that with a mag, zinc, & Cal supplement from Wal-Mart and Omega 3 1200mg also from Wal-Mart. They all can be crushed or broken open and added to ice cream. At Jonathan's age I would say 2 times daily would be enough once in the morning and a bit before bedtime so the effect can take affect before bedtime. Of course that is just a suggestion. I am not a MD by any means LOL.
Just a struggling mom like yourself. I would say also pick your battles and don't sweat the small stuff and hang in there. Country39024.6824537037Have you checked the alternative medications thread? There are many people that are going this route with varying degrees of success.
sorry
Hope that you find something to help your baby!

It is soooo frustrating. I'm just now coming to grips with the fact that this is my child, and I have to deal with anything he throws out at me. This is something that I never even dreamed of or wished for him! I wouldn't threat this on anyone else! ADHD is a mess! I can't believe it's gotten THIS bad. And to think, when I was in school, we used to make fun of kids on ritalin or prozac.
I'm going to try the alternative medicines route until we see the psychiatrist. Thanks!!
Is he on any vitamin and dietary supplements at the moment? I am in South Africa so you may not get exactly the same product there as we do here, but something similar.
I went into the local health shop today and told them that my son is suspected ADHD, battling to concentrate in school, having emotional outbursts etc. So she recommended a product called Maxi Mind, for concentration, memory and mental sharpness. It's vitamins, minerals and amino acides in a base of fruit powder. She suggested it be taken together with Cal-C-Mag, a product which is calcium, magnesium, potassium and Vitamin C. It's in powder form (I can't get my sons to take softgels, and squeezing them into foods doesn't seem good either, they hate the smell and taste.) Anyway these you mix into sugar free apple juice. I don't know if it's just me but my little one definitely seemed brighter after he took tonight's dose. So I'm giving my big boy the two, and the little one just the Maxi Mind, as the Cal-C-Mag is more for anxiety and luckily little one doesn't have that. I'm also considring the homeopathic route before I go full on medication.
Also, take a look at the crawling post in another forum on this site (I think Alternate And Complementary Medicine). If Jon didn't crawl properly as a baby this is something you may want to look into.

I think he sounds like a responsible doctor, since he was unfamiliar with your son and wanted to be sure of an accurate rx for your son. Perhaps he feels that something other than adhd is going on and that stims would only exacerbate the problem. The medication route is so tricky, be patient and let the professionals do a thorough job. Meantime, how long 'til you can see a psychiatrist? Is it possible for you take him out of school for that long? If you can uncomplicate and de-stress his life as much as possible until then, you will all benefit. Some family counseling might also be good, to help you out as well.Getting on meds and adjusting them to the individual's needs can be a tough journey. As hard as it is to wait, you will be less likely to start second guessing your descisions if you have a good partner (doctor) to work with, and you will have someone that can better taylor the meds to your son's needs. The response to meds is complecated by comorbid conditions like OCD, so you really need the experienced doctor working with you.
I did try caffeine (coffee, strong tea, cola) with my daughter after diagnosis and while I was anxiously trying to convince my husband that a trial of meds was the best thing for our situation. It was only good for 3-4 hours (however everyone is different) and helped for about 1.5 weeks and then the effects faded (probably the need to increase, which I was not going to do). I had though that this was also a way to check to see if stim meds might work - kind of a preview(again everyone is different so this trial really is not an indication of anything).

We have an appointment with a psychiatrist - but it isn't until later in the month (towards the end). We are going to go to counseling soon since I set up an appointment for Nov. 18th (yes, a saturday - it's AWESOME!). Anyhow. I understand where you are coming from...I am hoping the alternative medicine board might help too.
Thanks for your help! :-) I appreciate it!

Unfortunately, he is only on a vitamin close to "the Flinstones." It has calcium, etc. in it.

I don't know if GNC will have that here, but I'll print this out and bring it with me when I go shopping.

THANKS GUTSY!!!
My pediatrician also said that he does not prescribe meds. He said that prescribing ADHD meds requires specialized training, and that he recently had a patient who had toxic poisoning from a pediatrician prescribing ADHD meds. He said that it is a specialty, and you must go to a behavioral ped or a child psychiatrist for medication management. And I agree, peds should NOT be prescribing these meds. They have very serious side effects.
But some of us do not have the luxury of going to one of those specialty doctors...either due to inavailability in our area, or lack of insurance coverage/funds. I fall into the gray area where we make too much money to qualify for medicaid, and we are self employed, barely able to afford the 0 plus it costs us to have major medical with a 00 deductible. We manage to pay our ped bill, only because she will allow us to pay in installments, and I do not believe we would get that lucky with one of those specialized practioners. Maybe our ped has some extra training (behavioral ped?) maybe not, but she is the only option that I have besides not doing anything medical to aid my son. She keeps close tabs on him and has known and cared for him since birth.
