concerta - depression trigger? | ADHD Information

Hi, nekochan.  My dd was on Concerta earlier this year.  (She was 7) It made her VERY unhappy and moody and depressed.  At the time, I had no idea what was going on with her.  She became a total introvert that did not want to interact with anyone.  Very scary for us.  Hoping it was the concerta that was doing this, we switched meds.  Wow, what a difference.  Back to her old cheerful self.  I would say trust your instincts on this.  Don't drag it out 2 months.  We lasted 1 1/2 months.

Nekochan,

Had the same problem with Concerta. Just left the psychiatrist's office tonight and she told us that the long-acting ritalin (Concerta) does have that affect with some people. We're not there yet but suggested Focalin and described the chemistry that explained the difference between the two. My daughter started getting nasty while she was on the Concerta. She didn't seem to have the same response with the short-acting generic version of ritilin.

Wow - you know your kid so I would follow your parental instincts for sure.  I am an adult with adhd and take 72 mg of concerta.  I have noticed that the drug does make me more aware of my feelings and if I am happy it makes those feelings good, but if I am sad or something it makes me more aware of those feelings.  Maybe (from the LCdc) his awareness is more awake or stimulated now and I imagine it would be harder for a kid to process these than it would for an adult on the same med?

Parts of my brain I have not really used or been aware of seem to be awake now, it took me a few months to get used to it and I feel like concerta is helping me like nothing else could.  Do what you know is best for your kid and weigh all the facts and results.  Good Luck and I hope it all works for the best.

Has anyone ever experienced it where being on a stim (in this case Concerta) triggered severe anxiety and depression? My son was on Concerta for a few weeks after taking a break over the summer, and got so depressed and nervous we had to stop the meds. He's still having crying jags 6 weeks after going off the Concerta.

Every doctor SWEARS it has NOTHING to do with the Concerta, but I have my doubts on that one.

The psychiatrist is now saying give it a couple of months, and if things don't improve, then try wellbutrin (we had bad problems with 4 stimulants). I am VERY afraid of trying any new meds that mess with brain chemicals - I had a happy ADHD kid, who is now a sad, somewhat angry ADHD kid.

Thanks

HEidi
