hello,my son is also impulsive and his sense of danger is no existant, kinda make life interesting,he is also VERY hyperactive and inattentive.
does he have an IEP at school,we found it a great help,if the grades are sliping so yes you should maybe consider meds, concerta is a good one(i take it myself)but some people seems to have good success and less side effects with the daytrana patch.
Hi all-We got a dignosis of ADHD in Sep for my 6 yrs old son in the first grade. He also haves autotority processing problems. This all started in Kinder and we had to wait till he was 6 to have him evaluated by a neurophyc doctor. It was a wonderful visit and I learned about. But there is just so much I do not know and I want to help my son as much as I can. I also have a 2 yr old son and so far it doesn't seem like he has the same problems. Both the boys had several ear infections and have had tubes in their ears. My first boy just lost his second set, hopefully we do not have to go in a third time. My first grader was wonderful until he turned 4. That when I began to think things were just not right. He is not volient with any of us, even when his aggressive brother feels like beating up on him. It seems like at school he is a different kid. He is very emotional and gets upset pretty easily. No one really knows what sets it off, one day he can have a perfect day and looks just like the other kids. The next day he can be riping things off the walls and hideing under the table. His attention span is so short, about 1-2 mins. It makes me feel so bad for him. I can't image how frustrating it is for him. I know he wants to do a good job but it seems like physcially he just can't. When he does you can tell he just brightens up. We are a military faimly and this year will be his first year transfering schools, that is if we have to transfer. I am pushing to stay just for him. I think it will be in his best interest. Well thanks already for all the great info. I hope to be able get more info and help my son out the best that we can.My son is also the distracted unfocused end of the spectrum. I fought meds for years, but ended up succumbing and it was the best thing I have done. He was struggling to maintain a 'C' average before medication, and after for the final grading period of 4th grade, he got all 'As' and 'Bs' for the first time ever! The first grading period of this year he got straight 'As'.
He is on 54mg Concerta once a day, but we are about to reduce it to 36mg daily to try to address some pretty major eating issues. If we do not get the desired appetite increase in addition to the same good side effect of attention in school, etc., then we will be adding 4mg of Periactin 2x a day for appetite stimulation/weight gain.
It has worked well for us since March 2006, but it is really a huge trial and error for every child. Even twins sometimes respond differently to the same med and/or dosage.
The important thing is to work closely with your doctor to keep trying different drugs and dosages to find the right fit for you and your child.
I hope that this is helpful to you and good luck and welcome to our board!
Welcome! You will find this is a great site for advice and a friendly ear. Also somewhere where you don't feel alone. I've only been here for a week or so, but feel my sanity levels have greatly increased. Good luck!
Welcome to the boards! You have a safe haven here!
I forgot to ask. I am sure there has been talk on meds and I wasn't going to do it. But now knowing his attention span and how it is effecting his education I am rethinking and looking into all the meds. My son is more impusive and easily distracted. Does anyone have any suggestions on what worked best for your child who was more impusive rather than hyperactive. He does have combined type. Although I am always told that he is the least hyperactive 6 year old at the daycare (about 6 others).
thanks again!
