Dexedrine | ADHD Information
My 15 year old daughter is on Dexedrine. She does great on it. I don't hear much about it good or bad. Any stories? My 7yo dd was just prescribed this today. This is our first med that we will be trying. I would like to any info on this as well.Of course I have checked it out on the net but I really would like to hear some stories from someone who has been on it or whos child has been on it. I posted my first question on Nov 6 but so far nothing, Just your responses also wanting to know. i don't have a child on it - so am not sure why i am posting but as far
as i know i don't think there is anything obviously negative about
dexedrine. some people say it can cause a bit of dry mouth.
otherwise as far as i understand just keep a check on blood pressure
and it might be good to take "med breaks" so that a tolerance doesn't
develop.
GlenW (on this board) is an adult ADDer on dexedrine and it has worked
absolute wonders for him and he takes a week "med break" every three
months or so to make sure there are no tolerance issues and he doesn't
have to up the dosage. i think that is an excellent idea.
i think he mentioned dry mouth and teeth grinding too initially - and
although this probably doesn't apply to your daughter an initial
problem with lack of sex drive but that most of these issues remedied
themselves after about three months or so.
were you looking for things to look out for - potential problems as it
were? probably address that with your doctor. he should be aware
of all/any possible issues in terms of health. but i think it has
a reputation for being very safe and very effective. i am not
sure why no-one has answered - perhaps because ritalin is more commonly
prescribed than dexedrine? good luck anyway. although there
are always meds that don't suit people - i haven't yet read of anyone
getting on dexedrine and finding it suited them and then having a
consequent problem later....... if that helps reassure you?
all the best
Hello struggling - sorry I haven't been around to reply but life has just been too darn good! Hard to dedicate the time I wish I could to the board.
As chjones mentioned I am on dexedrine. Presently I'm on 20mg (10mg x2 spansules) and have been taking it for over 2 years now steady. It's worked wonders in my life.
The side effects I had were initial weight loss and loss of apetite which lasted about 3 months, heart palpitations, dry mouth, teeth grinding and a few lesser ones. The only lasting effects are grinding teeth and mild bouts of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The teeth are remedied with an appliance I wear at night, and the IBS with a mild pill called dicetel which takes away any cramping or irregularity with zero side effects.
For me the benefits far outweigh the side effects. I find clarity of thought, ability to resist urges as they come, and a restoration of my memory and maturity. It's like I stopped maturing at age 7 and now I'm coming into my own adulthood.
I went from a small child in a grown man's body to now having a full and happy adult life. Where I couldn't keep meaningful relationships with friends or family it's all coming together.
I sincerely hope your daughter finds the relief and happiness that I have.
Thank you.Hello again, I left a post earlier that my daughter was getting ready to start the Dexedrine. She has now been on it since Nov 10. So far, it has worked great. The only lasting side effect has been loss of appetite, but that seems to be coming back as well. I have noticed this past week that by the late afternoon she is starting to get a bit of the hyperactivity & inability to focus. Not much, but it is definately creeping back in. She sees the doctor at the end of the month, so I will be brining that up to him.Hi,
Dexedrine is an amphetamine product, and is essentially the same as Adderall - just older and cheaper.
There is a minor scientific difference, but for the majority of people, it is essentially the same thing.
I hope that helps.
Kenny
I'll be starting on Dexedrine spansules 15mg 2x daily tomorrow. I will keep in touch. Sorry.....I know very little about it.I just realized that my daughter is also grinding her teeth in her sleep! I just never associated it with the meds! My son has been grinding his teeth in his sleep since he was a toddler and had enough teeth to grind! Way before meds....don't know if he does it more now or not...but he is on Concerta.
