Welcome!How old is your son?
I was on Strattera for around 2 months. It gave me nightmares. Please watch out for side effects. I hope it works for him better than it worked for me.
Best wishes!
HI, we have tired several different meds, combinations of some etc...
My doctor has prescribed Straterra. My question is this... She said to start it at night, becasue it makes them very tired... She also said I can overlap with the Ritalin LA in the morning for school. She said to do this until the Straterra kicks in. HAs anyone had any experience with this?? Generally how long does it take?
I am happy about the Strattera becaseu it is a non stimulant, but I dont want to keep giving him 2 meds for too long... HELP
Strattera can take a couple weeks to see results and 4-6 weeks to see full effect (and if the dose is correct). It was originally developed as an antidepressant (did not work so well for this indication); it happens to be effective for ADHD symptoms in some people (good for ADHDers because it provides yet another option). HTH vickie39028.4541782407Hi and welcome. In my experience and talking to other moms with adhd kids is that after trying stimulants first for a while, then trialing Strattera, you are not going to see any effect at all. Sorry, but this is what I have heard. Hope it works for you--everybody reacts differently! We are using Strattera, he is know on the dose for his weight it has taken several weeks to get to that level. It has been a bit hard lately, we are sending in a form tomorrow to see how he has been at school and if he is on task.. We had problems with the stims. and the rebound with him. We don't have that problem.. and he is not as complusive with his behavior.. as for being tired that was only for the weekend.. we ended ritalin on a Friday and started strattera the next morning.. We used it for about a year. and it started out good but after about 9 months it was a nightmare! Take your time and I suggest you keep a log of all behavior, sleep, health (stomach and potty habits) and mental issues. The down slide can be slow and you might not see what happens 'til it's late into it. Good luck!
My son has been on strattera for about four months. To tell you the truth, I am not completely convinced about this med. In school they say that he is focused and not impulsive but still has some difficulties in grasping as fast as the others. At home, he comes usually tired from school and gives me hard time with his homework. I am still on it since my son can't take stimulants due to his tics. I am waiting for this week's appointment with the neurologist to see what can be done.
Anyway, keep trying because strattera takes time to kick in. I wish you success!!!
Hi! Our son is 9 years old ADHD, he has been on Strattera for 4 weeks. I am seeing very good result's. We haven't noticed any bad side effects. Hang in there.Hi everyone! My son, who is 10, is also on Strattera and having good results so far. Do not miss the rebound effects of the Dexedrine that he used to be on. He has been on the new meds for about 4 weeks. I am also concerned about any side effects that may crop up in the future. I guess just keep fingers crossed and see what happens! My son has been put on strattera today, he will also take ritalin until i can see a major improvment.Equasym, Concerta and Ritalin have not worked for my child so far, and he has also been getting lots of tics since he has been on them.So like anything I am willing to give it a go! He starts this week with 18mg strattera 10 mg ritalin Am 5mg of ritalin pm.Second week 25mg strattera 10 mg ritalin am 5mg ritalin pm.Then third week and there after strattera 40mg 10mg ritalin am 5 mg Ritalin pm.After 8 weeks to drop the pm dose and after 16 weeks to drop the am dose.Have also been presrciped meletonin(sp) to help him sleep. Also got more answer my son has now been diagnosed ADHD slight aspergers ODD secondary learning difficulties, Dyspraxia, and as havin motor tics.Which they think the ritalin is making worse! cameronsmummy39044.5094791667
