My 8 year old son started Adderall XR 10 mg this morning. I just got a call from his teacher that he had some problems this morning, but is now just very emotional. He started crying in the middle of class because he doesn't think the other kids like him because he can't sit still and is always in trouble.
She was thinking it was either a side effect or possibly he is just seeing the reality of has been happening and he's starting to care about it.
Can anyone relate? Did any of your kids have this during the first few days?

erickwsmom- is this the first time your child has taken medication for ADHD? I can understand the notion that your son.... may just now be seeing the reality and understand it. After all he is 8, maybe he has had this "im different" thought in his head.. and comparing himself to others (Common at this age.) for a while now .. but the medicine slowed him down enough to care about it... or sadly.. see the difference. Just an opinion... Hope it helps. I have a 6 yr old ... who ever so often show/express's this "im different" attitude. He has been on meds since he was 3 1/2. Best wishes to you.I'm on 18 mg of concerta and I find that I get weepy in the evening hours.
Talk to your dr. about this.
It seems that a side effect sheet for stimulants that my doc gave me when my son started Ritalin, said overdose effects can be lethargy and teariness. A couple times ds displayed these symptoms. My son is now ten, but when he was in kdg we put him on this medication and he cried all the time. After a week of this we took him off and tried something else. Years later we have been on Focalin for 1 1/2 years. It seems to work for about 7-8 hours. My daughter had crying spells, not immediately after she began taking Adderall XR, but about a month into taking it. These would last, sometimes, for over an hour! I am uncertain as to whether this was actually a side effect. Our doctor put her on Depakote, and the crying stopped. My daughter is 9 now, but she started medications just before she turned 7, so she would probably have been just over 7 when this took place. How old is your daugheter?
