Tics | ADHD Information

My son is on Dexedrine 10mg and has been for about 1 month. I have been hearing though that the meds can cause tics. Is this true and do they go away?

Although studies have shown that ADHD meds do not cause tics, they appear to unmask them or make them worse for some people. The tics can get better with time or not. Everyone is different. Guanfacine is sometimes given for ADHD symptoms in people with tourettes or tics.

I am worried that he has been put on this med to help him with the ADHD and then he will need a med to combat the side effects of that med and so on and so forth.  How bad are the tics? He is not showing any tic signs as of yet - I was just worried that it would cause it. Thanks for your information Ladies

As Vicki said, the meds won't "cause" tics, but they may bring them out in those predispositioned to have them.

I wouldn't avoid ADHD meds because of fear of tics.  It's just something to keep an eye open for.

I think if the meds are going make the tics worse, it probably would have happened by now. My son had a few "tics" (we called them habits, rubbing fingers together, blinking, stretching mouth open) and we started him on Adderal. We changed him to Concerta after 2-3 weeks because the tics worsened. He still had them some but they weren't nearly as pronounced. My son has some odd things he does but he has always done them so I guess they would not considered tics. Annoying yes but not tics.

Maxed Out , I would not worry about it unless you actually see some....I think that the individuals who have tics are a small sub group  of people who take stimulant meds. My son does not have any tics
